Advice please for high home phone costs..

I am with BT and am sick of paying what I consider to be a high monthly cost. I signed up to broadband some time ago, but it was for an 18 month contract which Im still under. However, I felt I didnt have any choice but to go with BT for my broadband (having had dial up before), because I have a BT email which I want to keep. I asked lots of people whether it was possible to keep my bt email address if I went with another internet provider and most seemed to think that I wouldnt, so I felt I had no choice but to stay with BT. However, my monthly outgoings for BT are 55quid, including internet, I hardly ever use the phone, so am on the cheapest 'deal' with them possible, any other deal would cost me more as I dont phone enough to benefit from the option 2 or 3.
To make things worse, I signed up some time ago for online billing, then found out that there was certain information that you couldnt access by looking at the bill online (cant remember what it was now) so I phoned them up to ask how to get this information about my calls and told the only option was to go back to paper billing and havent received any bills!! So cant work out what the 55 quid is formed of, Im sick of them
Any advice,, I dont want to do things like dialling seperate numbers when I use the phone and I dont want to change my email address....

thanks

Standard BT line rental if £11.75/month and standard BT broadband is £17.99/month - say £30/month in total.

What are you being charged the other £25 for if you don't make many calls?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Not a lot.I see they operate a minimum call charge see T&C
    5.4
Subject to clause 5.6 below, we will invoice the Customer for and the Customer must pay all
Charges. All customers are registered for per-second billing, there is a minimum call charge in
respect of any call made using the CPS Service and use by such customers of the CPS Service will
be invoiced in one-second increments with partial seconds of usage rounded up to the next full
    second.

total call charges for a quarter were about 30 quid, thats about a tenner a month, then on top of that is VAT of course, then i pay for anonymous call reject which is about £3 a month. I suppose it must be the vat.

the last total bill for the quarter was 112 pounds!!! I work full time, im not in during the day and probably make a couple of phone calls from the landline per week in the week and then at the weekend.

i add up the figures and they seem to work but i cant understand how a single person can rack up such bill

Although it is of no use to the OP as you do not want to change your email address, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage others to acquire their own domain so that they can control their email address and can therefore switch more easily between ISPs. I use 1and1.co.uk but there are plenty of other domain agents that you can use.

I think you need to be a bit more precise with your figures. You said in your first post that your monthly outgoings to BT is £55. In your latest post you say your last bill was £112 for a quarter. That's only about £37 per month. Which is the correct figure? Your line rental and internet will account for about £30 per month so together with the anonymous call reject makes a total of £33 leaving £4 for call charges. Are your call charges really £10 per month? If you want to keep your internet with BT and keep the call reject service then the only thing you can possibly save on is call charges. £4 is rather high if you only make a "couple" of calls per week but it depends when and how long your calls are. It would be even more un-usual if you calls do cost £10 per month. Your reluctance to use alternative providers limits your choices. You could possible save something on call costs if your calls are mainly in the evenings and weekends by signing up to the Option 2 call plan which is available free if you agree to a running 12 month contract.

You should be able to access all the billing information you need on the BT online billing web pages. There are various options for downloading detailed information once you access individual bills from your Account on the BT website. That would enable you to see exactly what you are paying for.

  • I am in a very similar position to the OP,home phone with BT but have my BB with Virgin. I was looking at changing to their 2 for £20 but notice that there is a 7p connection charge for each phone call.
How do BTs and VM phone call charges compare?
    TIA
