Need handset for orange SIM

My missus is on an old orange deal which was apparently offered when they were having a bun fight with virgin mobile. She gets a monthly itemized bill but is not charged any line rental. Calls are 15p 1st five mins, then 5p.

Not surprisingly she want to keep this deal but her phone's battery is f$%ked.

What are her options?

I was thinking on getting an orange payg deal and swopping her sim over. Would this work?

Someone told me that many of carphone warehouse phones are unlocked if you pick a handset which if offered across several networks?

She's not too bothered about the bells and whistles but she prefers a flip style and I like java games.

test her sim card in another unlocked/orange phone first to make sure it works ok (i think it was only the bt ones that had the sims locked to a certain phone)
if its ok then get which ever nokia is cheapest on any network and use the sticky at the top to get it unlocked (only the very latest top of the range nokias cant be unlocked free)
  • I actually have a phone with that virgin/orange tarriff. It's great isn't it - no line rental. Basically a good PAYG deal but without the need to top up.

You could always get a new battery, but I have used my sim in other phones with no problem (they were orange), or just get it unlocked - it's pretty simple. There's a site unlocknokiasfree or something like that, I've used it in the past.

    Good luck,

Update - replacement battery far too expensive so we bought a t-mobile PAYG handset (£10 cheaper than the orange version!) from carphone warehouse. As predicted the PAYG handsets at carphone warehouse are unlocked, so we swopped the SIM. Works a treat.

    See my response here.

OVP Virgin seems to be way better than Orange's current PAYG offering.
