Argos. I Bought New, They Gave me 2nd Hand

Options
Not sure what to do with this really, but having spent AGES umming and aahing over breadmakers the whole weekend, went to Argos to buy one.

Bread for tea then.

Nope... the box had been opened/resealed.
The unit was scratched on the side
Took the bucket out and it's got some stains/drips down the outside.

so it's OBVISOULY 2nd hand.

So now I am angry, poor (spent £60 including stuff to make the damned bread) and the shops are shut.

What a bunch of chavvy gits. I deliberately bought brand new and not a returns (which I could have got on ebay) because I have fears of electrical integrity of consumer units.

So now, poor and no tea.

I guess I now have to make the long trek back and take it back tomorrow.

Argos have done this numerous times to me that i now check my items before i leave the store.
Argos states it is allowed to sell items returned by customers as long as there in the same condition as when first purchased, but the items ive had second hand we the same scratched or pieces/parts missing.

not as sold condition in my world.

    Cheating scum.
If they tell you, you make a decision based on that knowledge.
But to pass off returns as new is morally wrong.

Especially as this one costs £10 more to buy it at Argos than if I'd bought it new online. And probably double looking for a local advert either on or offline for a 2nd hand unit.

This dont just happen at argos.
Where I used to work in the stockroom of a well know entertainment store, if someone brought back a dvd, cd or computer game and said it was faulty we had no way of knowing. So we exchanged or refunded and then after Joe Public left it went back on the shelf.
    Lazy, yes.
It was much easier to put it back for sale rather than go through the hassle of sending it back to the supplier. For the most part the "faulty" item was not returned by the other customer.

  • A friend of mine used to work at Argos, she was saying the other day the amount of people that used to go in and return things and ask if they resold returned goods - they always used to refund/exchange straightaway cuz they knew full well that they did!
  • Hey!

When returning items, the staff should always check inside the box to check if the item has been used or not. That makes sense, as you can't return it if it has been used. Obviously no one did with the bread maker...

Why is it that most people expect to be able to return items, but not buy returned stock? There's loads of customers who refuse to take an item because the box is dented or scraped, or has been opened previously, and ask for another one to be sent down. Fair enough if it is a present, but the box goes in the bin anyway! In most stores the returned stock is in as good condition as the unopened stock, because staff have to check it. Saying that, if the box was damaged, its always better to check the item in it first. Sure, you get a full refund if the item doesn't work..

I was thinking about this thread while in Argos today. A woman ahead of me got her hover (a henry style one) and the proceeded to open it, remove everything and check it all over at the front desk.

Update. I took it back to Argos, the woman at Customer Services was lovely and said that people took things back and were asked if it had been used and they flatly deny it. She said they should just say "yes" as it doesn't matter but if it's been used it goes off somewhere else, rather than back on the shelves.

Anyway, she couldn't offer me another one for at least a week. So I got my money back £39.99 and went online.

I ended up at electricshopper.com and it was cheapest from them. £31.95 including delivery. Bargain. They also have a go at price matching, saying if you can find it elsewhere cheaper they'll try to match it. I ordered it at about 9pm Monday night and it arrived by 10am this morning (Wednessday). That was on their normal delivery which they said would take 3-5 business days.

Opened it and of course it's brand new. Hurrah.

I took a hand blender back not so long ago, and never got asked if I'd used it, which I had. I did clean it thoroughly tho! lol
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

And then shop workers wonder why some of the customers are unpleasant:rolleyes:
