  • maybe i'm being a bit dumb here, and i shuld be thinking about getting one cheap not just getting one, but my wife friend asked me to find one for her son as she hasnt a clue about this sort of thing... i rang 4 shops, toysrus, wh smith HMV and forbidden planet.
I got one in HMV, the last one admittedly.

Well I read the initail message on this thread when it first appeared, and followed the instructions. I placed my order with Kays, got an email to say that it would come directly from the manufacturer, and then a letter to say that it would arrive by October 5th.
And it did, wifey called yesterday morning and said that a package from Kays had arrived.
It's a black PSP with an included upgrade disc to get the firmware to 2.0.
I've been told not to run this as the 1.5 firmware keeps the PSP able to play downloaded games from the memory stick. I'll let you know what happens.
    cheers

Argos still have stock for home delivery (as of 06/10/2005) for £179.95.

Now, this isn't cheap, BUT, for an additional £29.95 you can buy an extra 3 years breakdown cover, which also includes accidental breakage for the first 12 months.

My son managed to smash his screen after 3 weeks. Returned it to the store, and since they had none in stock, they ordered a replacement for home delivery which arrived 2 days later. No questions asked as to why it wasn't working, so they even refunded and replaced the breakdown cover at no charge when they could have made me buy more cover.

Moral of story - the PSP isn't exactly robust, and in the hands of a heavy handed child is more than likely to break within 12 months. Returning stuff to Argos is easy, so despite the high purchase price and the extra cost of the insurance, this could be the best deal for some people.

The version you will have is Firmware 1.52 which can NOT play games from the memory stick.

You have to upgrade it to Version 2.0 (Via the UMD supplied with the PSP)

(NOT Version 2.01 which you can now get via Sony Online)

Then you can down grade it to verision 1.50 which can play memory stick games.

  • My order on their site still says "Deliver by 8th". That was for an order placed on 5th September. Only letter I've got through was a copy of my invoice.

Just thought that might help work out whether the delay has to do with order date or such.

Came through today so they managed it on time.

Pity I don't have any games for it yet...

I haven't tried to play games from the stick, but I can say that I can see absolutely no benefit at all in "upgrading" to 2.0 or 2.01, unless that is the only way to return to 1.5.

Even if you don't plan to play games from the stick, there's loads of 3rd party stuff available on the net which works fine on 1.52 and is useless if you have upgraded to 2.0

I haven't read the entire thread, but can anyone give any good reasons for upgrading to 2.0 or higher, when all it seems to do is give you less options?

Just as an aside, if you're buying a PSP then you really also need to budget for a 1GB stick - around £65 - as the ability to save DVDs adds another dimension to the PSP. Sadly, a DVD will probably use around 400MB, so hopefully it won't be too long before a 2 or 4 GB stick is available at a reasonable price.

One very good reason to upgrade to 2.0 is to downgrade to 1.5 :), can't downgrade from 1.52.
