New fence - to paint or not to paint?

Options
I have just had a new picket fence put up. I was wanting to treat it but I was wondering what is best. Should I paint it with a fence paint or stain it?

What is best? I don't want it to start peeling if I paint it. Can that happen with fence paint?

Just painted my fence this morning, with Timbercare paint from B&Q (15% off at the minute). It looks 100% better. Paint should last longer than staining. Staining tends to be for decking rather than fence panels.

Your post suggests that you didn't erect the fence yourself.......so, did you ask the fence firm for advice? Why not ring them and ask what product to use?

Failing that, you could contact a local fence firm for advice.........or call in at B&Q and speak to one of their experts.

If you want to do it proper like....treat it first with wood preservative (dulux does some in their 1,2,3 step range or used to) then paint it either undercoat first or straight on with one of these new types top coat no undercoat needed.

Your posts should all be pressure treated stuff anyway so no need to treat those.
  • And don't spread the paint too thick....or it may well crack and peel
