I tried installing 8.04 on a virtual PC but it just wouldn't load up. Kept coming up with a processor error. Version 7 doesn't have a working mouse in Virtual PC. The only one that is reliable here is 6.06. Will version 8 work in a virtual pc environment?
Try using Virtualbox instead of Virtual PC - it's way better. Oh, and it's freeware too.0 -
Right I have downloaded and installed VMWare, even got a serial number for it. Installing Ubuntu 8 on it now. Will let you know my thoughts on it. Hopefully it is as good as wolfman says.

I have installed Ubuntu 8 on the VMware session. It works lovely and this is the first time that i have ever installed Ubuntu without having to mess around with Sound drivers afterward. Recommend it for fun.0

Vmware slowed my computer down so I use a dual boot...bit more awkward to get on to the OS but no probs.

I have found no problems with the VMware at all and have been running Ubuntu 8, Win2k and WinXP with 1GB RAM assigned to each with no issues. To test the machine properly I played FIFA08 on my Host OS (vista) while each of these was running.:T0 -
Yup I've heard others that don't have problems but incase it happens and you can't find out why you can't go wrong with a dual boot.

i may try another distro, wasn't impressed with my first (mandriva) though it was very pretty.Bit of advice before i start again, i have 2 hard drives, the second has space, i can create a 70Gb unallocated partition easy enough. mandriva insisted on 3 partitions, recommended a size itself, then the (main?) partition was fill as soon as the os and associated files were loaded, if i greate the 70Gb and leave ubuntu to itself, should it get it right? 2nd question, is driver support a little better? i have a broadcom based wireless card which seems to have no drivers (under mandriva) am i likely to be in the same situation?Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

You can do custom partitioning with Mandriva on the setup, but it's not the default if you just keep clicking through the setup screens.
Likewise, you can use windows drivers for your wireless card via 'ndiswrapper' which there is an option for when you configure a wireless interface. But I've not tried it, and it can apparently be problematic.
You still may be better off with a *ubuntu flavour, but having only run those on a VM or live CD I can't say for certain.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
