It is FE lecturers (ie. colleges) who are striking, not university lecturers.Looks like it because if you look at the link earilier in the thread they are looking at joining the strike action........ they've obviously realised they didn't ask for enough :rolleyes:3-6 Month Emergency Fund #14: £9000 / £10,0000 -
There is some discrepancy between rates of pay at different universities, I believe, as some have agreed on raises locally rather than subscribing to the national pay agreement.tintingirl wrote: »That's interesting, 'cos my kids father is a Uni lecturer and got 4.8%. If your son's whole class is off then he will not miss a particular piece of revision or practice paper.
If you were serious in your desire to teach physics, why not go and get the qualification? You would be welcomed!
As for your last claim - take it from people on here - teachers are seriously overworked and there are plenty off ill with the stress or leaving. Check out the TES forums for evidence.;)0 -
You have missed my point. What I was saying was that I fail to see how someone "not agreeing" that teachers are overworked changes the fact that they actually are overworked. I am not saying this does not apply to some other professions, of course it does. But how can you make a sweeping statement like that if you have not done the job yourself!
The fact that others in a community live on below average incomes is not really relevant. Surely it depends on the job someone is doing and how much responsibility goes with it as to how much they get paid.
I have done the job.
I take your point about relevant incomes but my point still stands. To many people the action appears frivolous and that may be based on several factors; one being the general standard of living of other members in the community given that many people who are paid far less than teachers have a great degree of responsbility in their jobs.
My main point was that yes, it does matter how people perceive the teacher's role and workload.0 -
I'm two thirds of the way through converting my degree over to science from arts and its costing a fortune. Sadly there is no quick fix to get funding for PGCE I need to be in a shortage area. Without funding I can't do it simple as. God knows how I'll aford someone to look after DH but thats my problem. If your son's whole class is off then he will not miss a particular piece of revision or practice paper.

I honestly thought there would be more help for those wanting to go into shortage areas but there isn't.Barclaycard 3800

I thought there was for certain subjects, but then I'm out of touch with the PGCE route now.

My son who is doing A levels has no maths, history or physics lessons on Thursday but his music tech teacher is there and has said that he will have them all day so that they can get ahead with their projects. As far as my sons teachers are concerned they are all worth the payrise apart from the maths teacher, I wouldn't whizz on him if he was on fire!0

seven-day-weekend wrote: »How much notice? A week?
I always could when I was working, espeially if it was only one day, but thinking about it my son always has to book it weeks in advance.
.
I think most people have to plan way ahead for a full weeks holiday and most need seven days notice for the odd day off, our school gave 6 six days notice so most people will have to rely on employer goodwill, some schools won't find out until 48hrs before as that is all the notice the union has to give.... that very fact was half the reason for the original posting, the strike action has the biggest impact on certain parents and not the LEA/Government it was aimed at.
Surely teachers refusing to invigilate on Sats would have the greater effect, hitting the right people where it hurts ????0 -

This is technically covering for striking teachers so he really shouldn't be doing this.LBM:1/1/12Debts @ LBM:£43,546  Debts now: £9,486  78% PAIDFound YNAB 1/2/14 - the best thing EVER!0
