Lady_K,
I've just loaded the voice alerts onto my Palm Tomtom 4.4 and it is excellent, really makes TT worthwhile.
"Now I'm having problems putting on the voice alerts rather than keep the beeps"
A few things to check:
Have you renamed the original data.chk file? 'old_data.chk' is fine.
Have you copied the speed zoned POIs into the map folder on your tomtom from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php (replace the
after installation, you'll need to set up all the new gatso, mobile and specs POIs (all 21 of them) to alert with the correct voice alert. which is a bit of a pain but very worthwhile.
Hope this helps.0 -
Hi thanx
I've got the pocketgps ones on now but they dont have the specs with speed warning it just says specs and theres no speed warning for gatso 20 and gatso 70 or the var ones or tba's so I've just had to put the camera type only on those. They may update the specs soon, I hope so
I didn't realize that pocketgps are going to start charging for their speed camera database now and updates as from february. It's updated by lots of people sending in new info on cameras all over uk not sure how keen they will be to do that if theres going to be a charge for it now so I suppose theres a possibilty it might not be as up to date in future so I'm on the look out for a new free speed camera database now aswell
I haven't even started looking at the points of interest yet as its taken me so long to sort but I put tescos in the tomtom one to look for petrol stations and it sent me right over the other side of the country about 200 miles away but apparently the pre set poi's on the tomtoms arent very accurate so I'll need to look into thse next. Theres allowance for 49 on the tomtom one but I think the speed camera database and voice warnings will have taken some upThanx

Hi,
Just in case anyone is interested in buying the Garmin or Micromaxx in North West UK, the Kwiksave store at Buxton, Derbyshire had some of both in this morning (21 Jan 06). Ask at the wine counter, they are not all on display.
For map and telephone numbers for this and other Kwiksave stores:

Hope this helps somebody!0 -

Cheapest is definitely not best as there is a large difference in performance between the best and worst GPS chips in these devices. The best chip to have is the SiRFSTAR III, which is more sensitive than any other chipset and has the fastest time to first fix. I have the Holux GPSlim236, which cost me £75 delivered from eBay. You can get them a little cheaper now on eBay but only from foreign sources (risk of tax/duty). Since buying mine I have found the same unit for £75.08 including delivery from....

To illustrate an example of the performance difference my friend's Navman Pin 570 cannot get a signal while sat for ages on the window ledge (inside) of my living room window. You need to go outside to get anything at all. In contrast my unit will get a signal while ten feet away from the window, in the living room, with me sat in front of it obscuring any direct line of sight to the window and the satellites outside. Mine works well stuck in a coat or trouser pocket or shut away inside the closed binnacle of my centre console/armrest in the car. It could be wired into the car and hidden out of sight permanently. I'm not sure how well lesser devices would perform in those circumstances.
This translates in the real world to faster and more accurate performance when driving through high rise cities, thick woodland, in heavy snow (falling, not fallen!) or even leaving a multi-story car park. Would you rather have a fix as soon as you leave a car park or wait 20 minutes to get a solid fix?

I dont know much about the chips etc, but heard rikaline are meant to be same as sirf III or even better. Ive seen the 32 satellites Rikaline Bluetooth GPS 6033 receiver, on ebay they all go for about £50-60, im waiting until i can get one bang on £50. I thought i might ask and see if someone has found something of the same price and product. A Little money saing now and again wont do no harm. I Just gotta win one of them auctions this week.If people cant help people on these threads, then they should rather not say anything then say something which isnt any use to the person who needs help0

Rikaline is the name of a brand. It is not a particular type of chip - http://www.rikaline.com/ . Rikaline do GPS units with the SiRF III chip and also the RFMD chip. i read about both types when researching my purchase and I saw a very exhaustive review that gave the Sirf III chip 1st place. If you look at Rikaline's own quoted figures for sensitivity of the SiRF III and RFMD chips you will see that the SiRF III is the more sensitive, although there is not much in it.....
http://www.rikaline.com/cf_gps.htm (-159 dBm)
http://www.rikaline.com/bluetooth_gps.htm (-157 dBm)
I'm sure *the* Rikaline will be just fine - but which one?
Right now I have my Holux in the window and have a "good" fix on 7 satellites and a weaker fix on 2 others. Picture here....
