Anyone with any Liteon model, I found this and if it works will avoid the complicated firmware hacks talked about elseware

Also, like all LiteOn recorders, the LVW-5045 has a region-code hack: On the setup menu, move the cursor down to the ‘exit’ box. While it’s highlighted press ‘2’, ‘9’, ‘6’ and ‘0’ on the remote and a separate menu screen will pop up. On this you can choose the region code you want (press ‘0’ for multiregion).

Yep that's true - but it doesn't remove Macrovision - for that the firmware hack is needed. As I said before, it's not hard & certainly not complicated. Just follow the instructions that I mentioned earlier in this post.

Thanks for that, I noticed it said it removed the Macrovision but I did not know what it was, could you explain please.

    Sure

Macrovision is a copy protection system used by most of the big screen manufacturers. Should you wish to make a 'backup' copy of a DVD you own (and you used to be allowed to do this - not sure if you still can) then unless you disable macrovision you won't be able to.

I may be wrong, but if you intend transferring your VHS collection to DVD then again you may run into problems unless you disable the said macrovision.

Thanks, well worth doing the full hack then.

Excellent piece of kit for the price, Multi-region hack is dead simple as already stated.
  • Must agree, just bought one yesterday, great bit of kit.
Even did the firmware update, real easy, unfortunatly forgot to add the macro patch, so not sure if I can try it again on its on, never mind .

Using the firmware patch tool (link I posted earlier) - it automatically removes macrovision for you. The only bit you have to manually 'select' is the region-free bit, and LP mode hack ..... so don't worry. I would imagine that you have a macrovision free DVD player, and you can always add the region free bit by typing in the remote hack also given in this thread.

Word of warning though - don't run the firmware hack tool again on the same firmware - it does mess it up badly.

Firmware upgrade & Macrovision hack performed without any problems.
Have not tested Macrovision yet, but I am confident it has done the trick.

Thanks to OP for all info.
