For those of you that are after one, Argos are now selling the LiteOn LVW 5006 DVD Recorder for £129.99. Cat Number: 533/4685
What's so special about this model you may ask ? Well it's badged with All-Write technology so it records it all formats - that's DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW as well as the usual VCD, SVCD etc etc. No more incompatible formats
All other usual features are included, DTS, Dolby 5.1 ....
Having done some research beforehand it appears that this machine may be made by Sony, and LiteOn also offer a 2year warranty on this model. Also LiteOn release firmware updates from their website - so adding new features, and fixing problems as they occur.
Now - this is a bonus. You can easily make this machine region-free (by a remote control hack) and also remove the Macrovision restriction by downloading the latest firmware from LiteOn, and then running a small piece if software to 'patch' the firmware before buring it to a CD and updating the DVD Recorder itself. It's not complicated, and takes less than 5 minutes !!
If anyone wants the relevant links for the firmware and other stuff, then feel free to post here.
Cheers

Hi Lycrawearer:

Sure
Firmware available from
http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download/index.asp
and the 'patch' from
http://ilohacker.tripod.com/
As I've said - I've done it already ... no problems at all - worked flawlessly.
Quality is fine - you can choose from 5 quality / disc lengths. The 120 or 180 min is fine. Noise - what noise ?!? The fan is very quiet ...
My only gripe (and it's only a small one) - it takes approx 7 seconds to power up ... but hey what's 7 seconds. Has worked with all discs that I've thrown at it. LiteOn acknowledged there was a problem with earlier firmwares regarding disc compatibility - hence the firmware updates.
Go for it .... I don't think you will be sorry. As for the Maplins one being cheaper - yep it is ... but does it record in all formats ?? I think not ...
Remember .. DVD+RW needs you to tell it where to start recording from, whereas DVD-RW automatically finds free space for you.
User Manual is available to view as a PDF from http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/download.htm - have a look & see what you think.
Cheers

Its even cheaper from TV & Video Direct - £99.99 + £9.99 p&p
Click on the Review Centre link in one of the above replies, then click on the link for TV & Video Direct and it will come up as £99.99.
Edit: Apologies, the £99.99 offer is for an inferior model.0
