  • I took advantage of a similar offer. Turned out I got an Inspiron 2200 1.4 Ghz (15" XGA LCD display) for £385.40 free delivery and a FREE PRINTER. It was a toss up between that or a 1.4 Ghz Inspiron 1200 (14.1" XGA LCD display) for £321 with a Dell Wireless 1350 Wireless LAN PC-Card 802.11b/g 54Mbps, for the Inspiron 1200 for £26.00 (£347 inc. VAT, free delivery).

I am very happy with my new laptop :)
  • Ended up with a secondhand Dell T610 for £570. It was more than I was intending to spend, but came with:-

    Pentium M 750 1.86ghz 2MB L2
    Centrino Chipset
    40gb Drive
    512mb 533MHz DDR2 Ram
    UMA Graphics 14.1 SXGA+ (1400 x 1050)
    Wireless b & g
6 Cell Lithium Long Life Battery
    Windows XP Pro (SP2)
    Modem
    Warrantee until July 2008.

It's lighter than the cheaper oprions I was after and checks all our other requirements boxes.

Best of all, it arrived completely unused, I had to do all the windows first registration authentification. It did have a small scratch on the top of the case (near the Dell logo) and the packaging had clearly been previously opened, but all accessories were still sealed in their bags. I'm guessing that the company buys a LOT of these and this one should have been returned as "damaged". In every other respect it was perfect though, no dead pixels etc.

Quite happy, but would have been nicer not to have to buy it at all.

    Mark.

The drivers are downloadable via the Dell support site by using your Service Tag that came with your laptop.

Partition the hard drive with XP BOOT DISKS downloadable via the Microsoft website... it's an executable download - you then run it and the boot disks will be made with your assistance... you need 6 diskettes. (lol, that's all dependant on weather you have a floppy drive of course. I have an external one that I use with all my machines. I can't live without it). If you do that, don't forget to change to boot order in BIOS so the floppy boots first.

Or, if you have a copy of Win 95/98/Me you could partition the hard drive that way with FAT32 as if you were reinstalling them over XP from scratch - you'd have no option but to reformat the HD, then don't go through with the installation and start over with NTFS. This has worked for me in the past without a floppy drive.
