there is one other thing that caused problems with the focus instrument clusters.
the cylinder head temperature sensor wire sometimes touches an HT lead and causes a spike which throws the needles on the dash board around.
probably not the fault but its worth a look.

It seems fords are going to replace faulty instrucment cluster at a fixed price of £99 for all, thanks to Watchdog (instead of the £350ish price previously charged).
Although this is good news, I still feel Fords should bear the full cost of replacement, as this is a design fault, anyone else of the same opinion.
I am still awaiting a reply from them regarding the faults on my focus (instrument cluster, central locking failure (2nd time) and air con problem).

I think they have also agreed to refund the difference for anyone who has paid over £99 in the past to get this problem fixed.

Well mines being doing it for one and off for about 18 months started with the temperature gague flying up into the red. One new thermostat, radiator cap, head gasket check, coolant system bleed, four gararges and a few hundred pound later they told me it's the Instrument cluster. Can go for months with no problem and then starts again but stops just as sudden.

A few months later the Speedo decided to join in, again doesn't occur all the time only occasionally. The odometer has zerod out a couple of times as well but comes back.

Well I rang Ford yesterday 15 minutes on hold, they take your details and Ford should call you back. You have to take it to a Ford dealer for a diagnostic check (which from what i've read on other boards you have to pay for) and then IF its identified as exactly the same fault as mentioned on watchdog they will offer you the £99 deal. If they can't find a fault, which in my case, being occasional, and again from many other boards the diagnostic doesn't always pick it up apparently, you'll be out of pocket for the diagnostic check and no £99 deal.

Not quite as easy as watchdog are making out!

Nice one Ford, I won't be buying a Ford again.

Have been into local Ford dealers today to book my car in for replacement instrument cluster, under the £99 deal, Asked to see the Service Manager regarding being charged for a diagnostic check, and was told they are not charging for this, just the £99 for replacement. Mine is intermittant also but they are still going to replace it.
Would advise you to go back to your dealer and ask for the Service Manager.

  • Hi there,

Can anyone offer any help or advise?

Our X reg car has being giving us problems with the electicals. The speedo drops down to 0 and then returns within a few seconds to minutes. Also when the speedo has dropped if you let the revs drop (slowing down, stopping etc) the car cuts out.

We have only had the car a year and bought it second hand. I have found a article from 1999 that says that the ford focus' were being recalled due to this electrical fault. Then I saw the watchdog problem.

I spoke to my nearest dealership who advised that they were only covering cars for the £99 repairs from 2001 but gave me the Ford Customer Care Number - 0845 11 11 11 1. What a load of rubbish!! I spent ages on hold, then got a snotty woman who just wanted to argue with me. I feel disgusted that because the previous owners did not take the car to the dealers when it was recalled I am now left to foot a bill!! And it is going to cost me £100 before they do any work!!

Very disapointed, and wish we hadn't bought a Ford!!

  • Just a quick update on this issue. I have an 03 Ford Focus 1.6 LX having done 78k miles. It sudddenly got this fault i.e. speedo, rev counter, petrol gauge, temp gauge and odometer all randomly going to zero. It was intermittent but persistent. I called the Ford Customer Care line and mentionned the Watchdog £99 agreed deal. Ford were lovely and happy to still honour the price - I had the new dashboard cluster fitted last week with no problems and was not charged for any other diagnostic tests etc. So if people are only just getting this fault now it is still worth contacting Ford and mentionning the Watchdog agreed price.

    Good luck, Rachel E

    Yup.

My Focus now reckons it has done 5,650 miles

Add another 100k to that and it'd be more accurate

  • hi, i have a 2003 diesel focus. my problems started this morning. the internal light inside my car wont switch off (as of last night), and i attributed the problems to an almost flat battery.

is this £99 offer still running, and if so, what do i need to say, or ask, when i go to my local ford dealership?

ps. does anyone know why the light in the inside of my car wont switch off?
