Beany, I'm sure if you go in and be reasonable, they will give you a gift card. I know it's a bit of a pain BUT you could exchange it for something else and then take it back again, say it's unsuitable and get a gift card.
I can't quite remember the policy on exchanging sale items but I can find out tomorrow for you....

If any 'concession' item that is returned to Debenhams without a receipt they can refuse it, as it is possible that you have bought the item elsewhere at a cheaper price and want to exchange it for a more expensive item in Debenhams- therefore they effectively lose their stock and gain nothing.

Debenhams changed their policy again several weeks ago- they no longer offer gift cards against goods that were reduced by 50% or more - you can only now exchange and you only have 28 days to do so.
Have a read of this one, posts 3 - 9, it seems many people were unaware of the change of policy.

Can you find a small fault on it anywhere and try taking it back as faulty - it could be anything - a bit of loose thread, a bit of wonky stitching? If you take it back as faulty you shouldn't have a problem.Accepted offer on our house - Sept 2006

I went back to Debenhams today and there was NO poster anywhere saying about the 50% off returns policy. I asked how I could have known and was told it's on the till receipt. After I pointed out you had to buy the item before you got a receipt she rumaged around in a load of paperwork and showed me an A4 sized board with it written in small print about 5 or 6 lines down.
I was served by a different lady, she phoned the supervisor but still only offered exchange.
She then said exchange for anything NOT reduced and bring it back within 28 days and get a cash refund.
But this does seem a silly carry on, will be writing to head office as soon as I have my money back
Thanks for all your help, (I did considered the pie sugestion)0 -

Duh!! How stupid is it that they are actually suggesting this to you!! Wouldn't it make their job easier if they just give you the refund straight away if they know what your intentions are  I work in a shop and although we have 'guidelines & policies' they CAN be over ruled - and its the most sensible thing to do in a siuation like this!!!Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
BLAG IT!!!
1. Exchange it for something/anything.
2. Exchange again (with second receipt) as unwanted gift and get gift vouchers!
DONE!!! :j0
