Debenhams..........help please

Options
Sorry don't know where to post this but I need help.
I bought a jacket and skirt in the Debenhams sale.
I was in a rush so didn't try them on, but the jacket was too big.
I have just tried to take them back for a refund and was told as they were reduced by over 50% I couldn't have a refund and must have something else.
Well I couldn't find anything I wanted and asked if I could have gift vouchers instead but was told no.
I have now noticed it does say on the till receipt Exchange Only on items reduced by 50% or more. but I wasn't told when I bought them.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions please?

Happened to me once before with a pair of shorts. So i swapped for something not in the sale and then took that back a couple of weeks later.

    Hi Beany,

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. They are within their right to refuse a refund/gift voucher as they display in the store and on the receipt that they will not refund if the item is reduced by more than 50%.

I'd exchange it for something else which is full price so your not left with something you cannot wear and then maybe change that for something you do want at a later date - providing you stay within your return times. Long winded I know but its the only solution I can think of.

    Sorry,

    Quackers.
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
  • This happened to me last year. I ended up getting gift vouchers instead of an exchange from the shop. This may help with time periods on exchanging goods as mentioned earlier.

Last year I wrote a letter to head office and complained that this was the first time this had ever happened. They offered me a cheque for the gift vouchers.

Not sure if they will still do this but these are a couple of options you may want to consider.

    Thank you everyone.
I don't usually shop at Debenhams as this store,in our area, only opened a couple of months ago.
I didn't notice any signs and it's too late on your receipt as you have already bought it.
I think, as they refused gift vouchers I'll do as suggested, get something full price and then change it later.
I think a letter to head office is also a good idea.
Wish me luck, I'm going back tomorrow!!
  • It might help you as it's a new store.
If I were you I would go back and hopefully see some one else.
Explain you are a new customer to Debenhams and you were not told about their refunds policy. New shop might be concerned about customer relations
I don't think you will get a refund but they might give you gift vouchers.Christmas is coming, you could always use them as presents.
    Good Luck

I work in a Debenhams- (but not FOR debs) but they have a HUGE poster behind the cash desk saying about the 50% off returns policy but people still kick off about it. It is very difficult to tell every customer about the returns policy. Returns policies for sale items are different in every store, I always make sure I know exactly what I'm getting myself in for.
Unfortunately there's nothing you can really do, as they really do advertise this properly.
If I can help in any other way, just ask- i'm a fountain of knowledge about Debenhams!! :D

  • It would seem your entitlement to a refund does not qualify under statutory rights. Unfortunately Debenhams are already being more generous than they are required to be legally. I think you're stuck with accecpting an exchange. You can see it from thier point of view. It's the end of the season and they have stock they must reduce dramatically to clear it. They don't want it coming back as refunds, as the chance to sell it again has passed. Best of luck resolving this.

I don't mind if they don't give me a money refund, but I don't really want anything at the moment from Debehams.
I thought they might let me have gift vouchers or a credit note that I could spend at a later date but they say I must exchange for something else.
Whatever they do they will still have returned the sale items .
  • Can't you eat a few steak pies until it fits??

    (Only joking. LOL)

I purchased a couple of T-shirts in the sale but did not have time to try them on so picked 2 different sizes. I asked at the till if it was ok to return the one that did not fit and was told that was fine. I was not advised of the restriction you have encountered.
Sure enough when I tried to return the T-shirt that did not fit they would only give me a voucher card. I protested that I had not been advised of this policy and stated that I had asked when I purchased but they were totally intransigent. The section manager refused to give me a refund.

I was so incensed that I have never set foot in Debenhams since and I never intend to purchase anything from their stores again.
