I'm glad this is being implemented now and people are being forced to use their black bins less .
The red Kerby box will be picked up weekly now .
Remember its Reduce , Reuse and Recycle , not just recycle . Try to buy items with less packaging .
Totally agree!:T Im in Newtownabbey too.
Ask Bryson house for extra kirby boxes (they are v helpful), we got extra and fill 3 plus a black bag full of plastic bottles and there are only 2 of us. Just make sure you separate the cardboard/plastic/tin in different boxes/bags. Im glad the kirby is going weekly.
At the moment we only leave our black bin out every 3 weeks. Before we had it filled to the brim every week + more!
We also try and buy shopping with less packaging but this isnt always easy in supermarkets! We have started using the local butchers, fruit shop etc and take our own reusable bags.
One thing I wish is we could put more in our brown bin. Food/vegetable waste? I seen NBC advertising compost bins for over a year now in the source mag and they never have any when you call them  Why advertise if you don't have them, im sick of phoning. Anyone know where you can get a small compost bin for under a tenner?
Good luck recycling everyone!Norn Iron club member - 2650 -

I was looking at their website and they are trying out a foodwaste bin in 1500 dwellings to see if it'll "catch on".
Mostly flats with no gardens,i'm assuming they think the rest of us with gardens will compost it ourselves? How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
with a 4 week old child in the house we're not looking forward to a hot summer of smelly nappies festering for 2 weeks outside the house

I'm in the DCC area as well and we have been on fortnightly collections since we got the blue bin as they are collected on alternate weeks. It can be a squeeze with the regular bin especially when you have children in disposables as they seem to take up some room. I know we probably should go real nappies but the thought of it
Got a free composter from the council which is just a big plastic tube with a lid. They sell them in B&Q as well quite cheaply. I am surprised how much it is used and does make the difference.
I have been using the amenity centre to recycle glass bottles, tetrapacs, etc but I hear some areas of the city are getting new boxes from Bryson soon :T. In fact some households already have them. I really hope we get one soon.
Recycling is something everyone should be embracing. It's good to hear that so many moneysavers are doing their bit, but it is disappointing to see the number of households in the area that I live that refuse to use the blue bin
. The council really should try to ensure that people are recycling. 0 -

just out of interest how did you contact them and how many extra kirbys can you get?0 -
Im in Antrim and we've had the fortnightly collection for a few years now.
I changed my blue bin for a bigger size (provided free by council) and now fill it every two weeks, its handy with the brown bin because I have quite a large lawn. The black bin..............there are some fortnights when its not too bad but there are other weeks when I am running to the dump with black bags. Ive learnt to put it in the shade in the summer reducing the smell, all my rubbish is bagged before it goes in the bin but it can still stink! There are three of us in the house but my nextdoor neighbour is single and lets me put any extra bags I might have in her bin on collection day.
A point about getting an extra black bin, one of the neighbours got themselves an extra black bin (family of five) and ....you wont believe this but I saw it with my own eyes lol....the binmen were merrily emptying the bins when suddenly there was a discussion and all the bins were counted. They figured 4 houses in the row, 5 bins out. So One of the bins was left full!!!!!!:rolleyes:0 -

Well don't use them then.

Invest in some real nappies. Many councils give you a grant to get you started. Once you get in the habit just think how much better they are for the environment. :j :j :j Look on a nappy site - there are many alternatives and they will save you lots of money in the long run.
The disposable nappy industry is a marketing success story - don't be taken in by it!    :mad:Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -

I think they'll give you as many kerbies as you will use...I agree with the poster above, they're really helpful0 -

No, I realise that they'll only empty one bin for each house.
Was considering an extra bin incase there is extra bag or two that won't fit into the bin on the week of collection..
Would rather have it in another bin with a lid than sitting out. We have a real problem with stray cats ripping bags open looking for scraps. Also my house backs onto a field and we have the added problem of rats. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0
