Fortnightly Waste collection in Newtownabbey

Just wondering what preparations (if any) people in Newtownabbey are making for the fortnightly waste collection starting 21st April?

Do any of you with an average sized family or above feel its possible to only fill half a bin per week. Even if you are being on the ball with your recycling?

We have 3 kids and are seriously considering buying another bin to take the excess on the week they don't empty the it.

We are going fortnightly on 1 June also in Ards Borough Council. We are a family of five and think that we might just pull it off if we are really careful, black bin in 3/4 full most weeks without being squashed down. Blue bin is full every fortnight. I have a friend in Castlereagh were it is already fortnightly with 5 children and I know her husband has to go to the dump with rubbish every week as they cant manage.

we in north down have been fortnightly for a while now, ask ur local council for a bigger bin. we got 1 free from NDBC its about 1.5 the size of ordinary wheelie bins. i still make weekly runs to the dump tho, and thats me oh and 4 kids.

We in Londonderry/ Derry/ Stroke City/ whatever ya wanna call it, have had it now for a few years, you learn to live with it TBH, sometimes its a squeeze, but we manage to fill the recycling bin now too every 2 weeks as well :T :T :T :T :T

Just getting used to our new wee friend called Kirby too;) a wee black plastic box for glass, batteries, paint, small electrical appliances etc.... he gets picked up every 2 weeks now as well:T :T :T

Recycling is the way we have to go so we have to landfill less, having said that expect longer queues at your local dump, or a bit more fly tipping in your area, if you live near the boarder however you should be well used to this by now anyway :rolleyes:

We are a family of four and we usually have room in the black bin after a fortnight. I don't know why we don't fill it!

FAR too much waste goes to landfill .
I'm glad this is being implemented now and people are being forced to use their black bins less .
The red Kerby box will be picked up weekly now .
Remember its Reduce , Reuse and Recycle , not just recycle . Try to buy items with less packaging .

We have been fortnightly here for a while. We are a family of 4. I didnt know how I would manage, my bin was always full after 1 week. However, we have two blue boxes for plastic and tins and papersack for paper and cardboard etc and it is fine. In fact just put bin out and only three quarters full. My blue boxes are usually nearly full. However, I do realise that families are all different. A family of 4 could have two babies in disposables, and some families have pets so have extra, but we dont have either and manage

We have been fortnightly here for a couple of years. Bin one week, blue boxes and paper the other. I was worried at first because my bin was always full to overflowing after 1 week! However, we manage fine. My two blue boxes nearly get filled and I put paper and cardboard, packaging etc in the sack. We are a family of 4. However, I do realise that some families will find things more difficult. We dont have any babies, so no disposables and we dont have pets and I think this will make a difference, but we have got used to it.

System

We are in Lisburn and have 3 full size bins. 1 black bin for normal rubbish, 1 blue bin for recycling and 1 brown bin for garden waste. We manage ok with these sizes and fortnightly collection. The brown bin only gets emptied in certain months of the year. Having these 3 full sized bins does DH, me and 2DD's.

I do all of that but still manage to fill a bin every week which is really disappointing for me as i've been trying so hard lately

It is good news about the weekly Kirby Box collection though.I've ordered another 2 from the council so hopefully that'll help.
