Purpleivy - that's a cunning plan! Good idea. I don't drink tea and coffee and rely on diet coke to get me through the day at work (i have depression so get very tired sometimes and the caffiene hit wakes me up a bit), but we could definitely start to cut down, rather than stop completely.

Sometimes it can be a bit of a vicious circle with caffeine based drinks...you come to rely on the caffeine to provide the "hit"when you are tired, but then it can disturb your sleep patterns, so you get tired, so you need the caffeine to perk you up.....

It is hard to cut it out, and can cause headaches, but it is usually better for your health (& possibly for your depression too) to get by without the caffeine "hit" in your life.

Why not just reduce it slowly, by one every day or couple of days?

I used to drink Pepsi like it was going out of fashion - 2 or 3 cans in work, then with whisky (to help me sleep ) in the evenings, then with vodka when I went out, then with paracetamol to get over any hangover... I found that gradually replacing it with other drinks (I don't drink coffee, but started drinking green tea) helped & I didn't feel as rough as if I had just suddenly stopped.

DS1 had similar problems too, he drank it to stay awake to play computer games all night...

Apart from anything else, you will see a difference in your shopping bill too :)

    Hi floss,

Thanks for the tips. I currently have 2 cans a day (3 if its really bad! ). Its a good idea to replace it with something else. I love the smell of fruit teas but find they don't taste of anything.

    Can anyone recommend anything else?

Some fruit teas are better than others, it's worth having a look around and trying a few brands. I find the more 'commercial' ones (like Twinings) smell lovely but taste of nothing, but if you have a root around and try a few brands there are some that are lovely. Or you could try herbal tea, like peppermint or camomile, or even hot honey and lemon, I love that. Or a chai tea, you can get redbush ones that are vey low in caffeine and are lovely and spicy, not tea-y at all. If you have a look on the internet (google free tea samples) you can often find companies who'll send out a bag or two as a sample - it's a cheap way of trying the product :)

Leave the bag in for long enough. A half spoon of sugar helps to bring out the flavour

I leave the bag in the cup for fruit and peppermint tea. You may also find that once you've weaned yourself off the Pepsi you'll find fruit teas taste better. At the moment you'll be used to the strong, artificially sweetened Pepsi which will make them taste weak.

  • I love Diet Coke but at the price it is, I leave it on the shelf.
I have tried every "Cola" own brand and they all taste like rolla cola except for ASDA. In the house I force myself to drink out of a bottle instead of a can as it's only 44p per 2 litres. The DeCaf tastes just as good and I only drink this after 6pm. In cans it costs around £1.10 for 6 cans compared to £2.50 for proper stuff.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:
