People who are genuinely struggling through no fault of their own deserve our support, both financially and in other ways.

I think I view things very differently to this. That sometimes people can find themselves in some very difficult circumstances perhaps it has been contributed to by themselves (in some way) but I feel like if people are in dire need then they should receive help regardless and support and advice is free after all (on this board anyway), its just having some compassion for someone's situation. I'm not talking about the OP just generally.

I guess that in my (no doubt right-wing) view we are responsible for ourselves. We should not expect others to subsidise us. In the short-term, maybe. Just to tide people over difficult times.

I believe we are responsible for others too as we are responsible for ourselves.

Because the OP lives in a family home, it will be presumed (rightly or wrongly) that he's not in immediate need of money to survive. Some people have families that simply don't care. The best way out is definitely a job, ANY job that pays money, preferably one that has food for staff that work for the company.

I hope I do have compassion. I am not against contributing to the short-term support of those who are in genuine need. In that respect, we are responsible for others, as you say, and quite rightly. Indeed, if I could decide what my taxes were spent on, perhaps one or two of the beneficiaries would include those people who had got themselves into a sticky situation. I've been there. And, again quite rightly, this board offers some superb non-judgemental advice. There are threads that have offered a reason to live to some posters in dire trouble.

But generally I'm a filthy Fascist, I admit it. I don't agree with benefit payments (although I do admit to accepting Child Benefit, so shoot me now), unless it's for a short-term tide-over, or if one is severely incapacitated. Jobs at Waitrose and other supermarkets are pretty plentiful, it seems. So you can't expect someone to talk about claiming benefits without people (like me) saying, 'Hey, don't ask for money from other people. Get a job if you need one!'

How horrid I sound. Maybe it will one day come back to haunt me. But I do believe we are responsible for ourselves.

However, I do very much hope the OP finds a job and I wish her the very best of luck.
