    Agreed, as I said in an earlier post.

    Maybe worth the OP going into connections and making sure ethernet is not disabled.

    Thats really funny, I have 3 of the motorolla surfboard modems 5100 series and not one of them will work with a straight thru cable, but work pefectly with cross over cables (even the manual for the modem says you have to use a cross over cable), this was the reason why in the first post I asked if it was a motorolla modem that the op had. if you look at any of the links i've provided you will see that this is the case.

    I just don't see how your info is relevant to the OP's situation. There is no good reason to use USB in preference to Ethernet and the Belkin has auto negotiation ports.

    Whats even odder is that my SB5100 wont work with Xover :confused:

    You could try to see if the IP address assignement is set to auto in the tcp/ip properties of your NIC.
    Alternatively to post #11 try netsh dump
    which will only work in xp spk 2 or vista and will perform a ipstack reset and flshdns and release and renew ip addresses
