Removing router and connecting direct to Modem problem!

Hi everyone!

Hope someone can advise me on this one as is doing my nut in!

I have a Belkin Wireless Router as used to have a wireless laptop which I connected to it. I have since sold the laptop and have the computer connected by a RJ45 cable to the router and the router is connected by another cable to the modem.

I want to take the router out of the equation and have the computer connected directly to the modem. I have tried this by remving the modem and using the cable from the modem straight to the computer. When I try to go online it tells me it cannot renew my IP address. I tried to do this manually it the command prompt by doing a ipconfig /renew and then got an error message saying that it was unable to contact the DHCP server, request times out.

I dunno why it won't work! Is there anyone out there which has had this problem or knows how to fix it? I don't understand why connecting directly won't work? :(

Help!!!

Have you tried powering off and then powering on the modem? You may have also have disconnected a cable by mistake, can you see any activity on the modem?

Yep have tried that...the modem says that there is activity. I have been looking at stuff online and someone mentioned that sometimes you see that error when the router is what is responsible for allocating the IP address or something? With the router out of the mix it won't be able to allocte the IP then? I'm confused!

Hi, a traditional modem converts digital to tones to send down the lines and reconverts them back to digital, hence mo-dem means MOdulate-DEModulate

A router may have a DHCP server hardware included.
DCHP- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol- gives out ip address when asked.

Why do you think your modem will do DHCP? Does it say so any where?

note it should do if there are several rj45 connections. Do you have the correct cat5 cable, a "straight through" and not a "crossover" cable?
Does the little "link" led (green) light, when the cable is inserted?

Connect directly to your modem and reboot your pc and see what happens. I would be interested to see what happens with your network card showing connected or not. On the task bar, next to the clock should be an icon of two small computer screens, double click this.

    OK...

When you connected the router to the modem, you will have configured the router to be the DHCP server and changed the option for the modem to be to off. What you need to do is log into the modem and re-enable the DHCP server. You're probably going to have to manually set an IP address for the network adapter on your PC. So for example, if the modem IP address is 192.168.0.1, set the IP address of the network adapter to 192.168.0.2 and set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 and DNS server address to 192.168.0.1. You can leave them set at that if you want to - it'll still work.

The router gives you added protection, nat which acts as a firewall, without it, you will be relying on software to protect you.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Hey guys,
I have checked and the router manual states that you configure it to be the DHCP server. I took the router out of the mix and then checked the modem and this is also set to be the DHCP server...now I am mega confused! Any ideas?

Start, Run, enter netsh int ip resed resetlog.txt then hit ok and then when done unplug modem power cord for 2mins then plug back in, and use ethernet from modem directly intp PC or if you only have a USB cable make sure you have the drivers for your modem.

If not post the make and model of modem.
