Why would you want to remove the router which gives you a hardware firewall from your setup? Your reducing your security and if you ever buy another laptop or a games console or other wifi device you'll need to put it back anyway.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Is your PC's NIC using a static IP by any chance?
If yes, then you should disable it because your DHCP will effectively be disabled.

Basically, I want to remove the router from the mix and start again! Once I am sure I can get internet access without it, my plan was to reset it back to it's factory settings, pick a new password and then allow my Wii and DS to get online. This is what the issue is really, as I don't know the password for the router, the person who set it up, did so so that nothing else could see it unless he allowed it to. Which means when I set the Wii to try and see the router, it says it cannot find it.

I know how to reset my router to the factory settings and know this will remove the password. But what the manual doesn't say, is if I have to reconfigure EVERYTHING or if I can still get online once the reset has been done and then configure it from there. The manual states when you are first setting up the router, you must have a PC with proper internet access forst and then you have to install stuff and then add in the router afterwards. Of course after the reset, thr router will still be in place. In other words (cutting out the waffle!) I don't want to reset the router and then find out that something has gone **** up and I can't get internet access at all!!!

you will need to use a cross over ethernet cable for your modem not the straight thru one which you would have had connected to your router otherwise it wont work (some older NIC dont support auto crossing of network cards)

If you don't know the password for the router just reset it and start again. Your modem connects to your ISP, so you will only need to configure the wireless encryption etc. after a reset. A crossover cable is not required.

Straight through or crossover here nothing to do with the NIC!

You can use the SB5101 drivers from here http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/support/default.asp?supportSection=CableModems
