This is what I'm worried about - most gmail users will proably use it via the website, and pop3 is seemingly unprofitable (as pop3 users won't see the ads) so I'm worried they could do what lycos did to me and stop the pop3.

Yahoo email is free, but there are adverts on the webmail. To get pop access you agree to receiving emails from Yahoo with a bit of advertising on, although you can pick which areas of interest you receive offers on.

They are supposed to be weekly, but I don't get them as frequently as this, and sometimes there is some interesting offers on them so I don't mind. If you don't want to read them, just delete or set your antispam to catch them...

I was thinking of this route as I want an email address that supports SMTP and POP3 for use within Outlook.

Paul_h, do you have the link where it states you can opt to receive junk mail in return for POP3 access and does this include SMTP sending as well?

    Thanks.

I don't think I can link to the info as I can only get to it when I'm logged in, but I can confirm that it works fine with Outlook, both for sending and receiving.

After you register, you go into 'Mail Options', and the option you need to select 'POP Access and Forwarding' where you can set it up.

They call the option 'Yahoo Delivers'

copied from my options page -

    POP Access & Forwarding

gives you even more flexibility with two free features!

As a Yahoo! Delivers member (you asked to receive special offers via when you registered with us), you can take advantage of email forwarding and POP access. Each one is free, exclusively for Yahoo! Delivers members.

Access Yahoo! Mail via the web interface and through any email program using POP3 (e.g., Eudora, Outlook, or Netscape Mail).

Like I say, it works great for me and I don't seem to get many 'offers'.

Also found some blurb how to set up outlook...

    POP3 Access

In order to use an email client to send and receive Yahoo! Mail messages, you must designate a new incoming (POP) mail server and a new outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
If you can't add new POP or SMTP servers, you'll need to change your current server settings. Before you change anything, write down your current settings -- you may need to revert to your original settings later if you decide to send and receive messages from your other email addresses.

Here are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail:

    Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
    Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Account Name/Login Name: your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without the "@yahoo.co.uk")
Email address: your Yahoo! Mail address (i.e., user@yahoo.co.uk)
    Password: your Yahoo! Mail password

    Hope this helps

I use my own domain - as I'm a web designer anyway..

but I would also recommend yahoo - I use their pop and I only get the spam from them about once every 2 months.. they're reliable

Does anyone else that uses Yahoo Mail with outlook or another email client via POP3 or SMTP having problems recently?

I started using YahooMail via Outlook for over a week now as discussed in this thread but the other day I suddenly was unable to retrieve (ie via POP3 settings) my YahooMail but I can send.

I have checked the server settings as discussed on Yahoo's website but still no luck!

    Thanks.

I went through each setting one by one in case something was different but couldn't find anything and as soon as I knew someone else didn't have a problem (in other words it wasn't yahoo at fault) then I knew it was the settings I'd saved within outlook. I then just had to resort to deleting the settings within outlook and creating them again but it works now. It worked for a week or so when I did the settings last time so I can only assume corruption or something had messed something up within the settings (pop3) specifically because I could send emails without a problem.

    Thanks again.
