Cheap pop email addresses

Does anyone know where I can get cheap pop or SMTP email addresses? Me and my family have been using the ones which came with our BT broadband connection for years now, but want to switch to a cheaper provider (we are paying £25-ish a month for 512k).
I don't want to use the ones which come with the new provider as we may have the same problem should we want to switch in a few years.
We all used to use Lycos's free pop accounts, but they switched to a useless http thing which we didn't like - which is why I don't mind paying a small amount. We could be saving £15 a month for our broadband so a couple of £s a month for email seems worth it to ensure a pop connection.

To add- have started googling "pop email" and found some cheap providers (like https://www.hotpop.com - $15 a year etc.) but I would like one with a more conservative (small c - Labour member) sounding domain.0

I use yahoo mail which seems ok, works fine using pop & smtp. I set mine up for the same reason.0

Why not just register your own domain?
That's what I do, costs me £1.99 a year with https://www.1and1.co.uk
I just set the domain email addresses to automatically forward to the ones provided by my ISP. If I ever want to change ISP I can easily change the address to which the mail is forwarded to that of the new provider.

I looked at Gmail, but it looks more webmail orientated than most, there's lot of features which I simply wouldn't use.
I just wanted one which would give me the pop and smtp mailboxes. Yahoo works great for me, they will also forward mail if you want.0 -

The SMTP / POP3 service works fine with Gmail. Interestingly it's one of the few to use SSL for the connections.
With regards the Webmail there is a general trend to improving webmail services to provide more features. The Plusnet webmail is very nice, not quite OWA (Outlook web access - gives you Outlook through a web page). Google are funding it through the display of Adwords relevant to your emails.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

I should have added that if you go down the domain registering route you can of course have a domain name of your own choosing (assuming nobody else has registered it). For example:
me@gizmoleeds.co.uk

This is what I'm worried about - most gmail users will proably use it via the website, and pop3 is seemingly unprofitable (as pop3 users won't see the ads) so I'm worried they could do what lycos did to me and stop the pop3.0 -
I think they are looking long term to get you to use google Talk and then later their own Voice over IP (which is where they will make money) I suspect this is a loss leader to get people signed up and move away from hotmail.Ex forum ambassador
