The chinese supermarket and why I love it so...

Hi
I'm in Diss, Norfolk. Would anyone happen to know where my nearest Chinese/Asian supermarket might be? We did have one in Diss a couple of years ago but sadly it had to close due to lack of customers - I think I was probably their only customer apart from the takeaways!!
I do visit Makro ocasionally but never seem to think about getting rice etc from there, will have to do a price check next time I'm getting stuff for work.
We have a Tesco, Morrisons and Somerfield all in view of each other in Diss and I do tend to play them off against one another depending on what is on offer and where.
Hi there are loads on Magdalen Street in Norwich, one on Dereham Road and one on Ber Street, fraid I dont know their names0 -
Hi

I'm sure you get to Norwich occasionally - there's a Chinese s/market in Ber Street, a Filipino one on Dereham Road (cheaper) and an Indian one on Magdalen Street. All sell general asian stuff, so it doesn't much matter which one you go to.
The Filipino one is newish and very good - the ladies who run it are helpful and they have some wonderful information posters up (eg different types of chillies, asian vegetables). Ber Street gets fresh tofu on Sunday mornings and has huge bunches of coriander and bok choi. All are used by the local takeaways (as is Lidl - despite what another poster said, rice and fresh veg is better value there).0 -
Ytaya, Frankie1star & Sarahemmm - Thanks for the info on Norwich. I've lived in this area for all my life but rarely venture to Norwich, my family are from Ipswich so thats where I tend to go, but now I have the perfect excuse to explore Norwich more!! DH is gonna love me!!!Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0

For cheap coriander, parsley, mint, rice, couscous, lentils, chickpeas etc... and for bulk buys, check also the indian supermarkets and the turkish ones.
Indian ones are great for large bulk-buy rice bags, some of them also sell broken basmati rice bags, up to 25kg size, and it costs less than 1/2 of the regular basmati. It is broken but tastes exactly the same as the whole grains!
In turkish supermarkets the yogurt comes in large buckets! Also cheaper halloumi, hummus and all sorts of nice sweets, and fantastic flat breads.
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
The ones near me sell live crabs. Well barely alive and they can hardly move. All stacked on top of each other in a small crate.0

Another small one if you visit Norwich, although it's not a supermaket but an asian store where they also sell a small sample of what you can also get at the one on Ber Street....this one can be found round the side of Mr T's Express store ...follow the road round where the Tescos Express is and it's not as far as the old Rainbow Wholefoods shop that used to be down there......sorry don't know the name of the street but it's off Pottergate0

thankfully mine is up the road from my work so i can go at lunchtime whenever i fancy
tofu... £1.35 for 3-4 servings pack, water packed and much nicer than cauldron etc
stir fry sauces
thai green curry paste - £1 for a big tub you only need a couple spoonsful for a curry, tried the asda stuff and its tasteless crap! had to add a whole jar to get it to taste of anything.
sweet chilli sauce, oils, seasonings (tubs of cujun, bbq etc for potato wedges for a quid against 60p for a tiny pack at supermarket) ... spices of course but the packs last forever!
cashew nuts) much cheaper than elsewhere
peach iced tea, mango juice/fizzy pop, root beer in cans (OH is canadian.. proper root beer!
spring roll wrappers - also work for samosas... i make them myself at home and oven cook, MUCH healthier and can be made and frozen in batches.
noodles and rice - both much cheaper than supermarket
coconut milk, tinned baby sweetcorn, tinned chickpeas (about 20p a can). good for dried beans too but our metered electricity is expensive so cheaper to buy cans for me.
noodle snackpots - i buy these occassionally for work, always MUCH tastier than supermarket equivalents. spicy thai ones are great for getting rid of colds
ours also sells vegetarian jerky type stuff... flavoured soy in shelf stable packs... much nicer than it sounds
oh and finally.. plastic containers. ours is about a pound for 10 plastic takeaway style boxes, which are fab for the freezer (single/2 person servings and stack nicely).
its worth going for the service alone.. the couple who run our local one are lovely!0
