Clearly I was born too soon. I should just have been starting off and then I might have been able to pick up on all this new-fangled stuff. Because my Norton AntiVirus was about to run out, I knew I needed to do something. Well meaning folk had told me I could get equally good stuff free but I'm scared of doing anything knew, just in case I introduce problems.
This morning a box informed me I had only a week left, but it had gone before I could do anything about it. So I emailed Norton and asked for advice. They sent me a link to download the 2008 version which amazingly enough I managed.
Once this was done and dusted I logged off and went out. On my return I booted up to see if all was well, (you see, I lack confidence). A box appeared for an enth of a second telling me that my antivirus had been switched OFF.
So, with this in mind, I need someone to tell me what I should do to see if this is so and if it is OFF, point me in the direction of ensuring it is ON, please.
Please no links telling me what I should read, just a simple answer to help.

As you have decided to go down the Norton route, you had better ask Norton what you should do now, you little winker you!
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Remove the norton anti-virus from your machine and download and install AVG.0

You downloaded Norton but did you actually install it .???
In which case your existing Norton has run out and you need to install the new one .
Norton is not the security package of choice it was five years ago . If you have paid for it dont worry it will keep you covered as well as the majority on the market .

Norton is a resource hog and legalised form of malware, remove it from your computer, it was designed for the "Here come the PC World get-along gang, lets sell them expensive add ons for their PC" type customer, as other posters have said use AVG or AVAST, free, proven and very, very stable.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

I have used AVG for many years and it's stopped plenty of viruses in it's time. get it for free here:

It updates itself every few days for free and never asks for money. I like programs like that0 -
Shouldn't that be free.grisoft.com?ringo_24601 wrote: »get it for free here:

First things first, you have downloaded the 2008 NIS, but have you installed and activated it?
I'd recommend you use Symantec's chat line, I found them very helpful and another MSEer got their problem fixed with it the other day, here is the link.

I followed your link and downloaded what i thought to be your recommendation, which is Avira AntiViv Personal Edition Classic and not that it is only valid till 31.5.08 and it gives me the option to upgrade to Premium
So, have I made a booboo? and downloaded the wrong thing? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
No, but Avira Personal will nag you about it repeatedly unless you give in and 'upgrade'.So, have I made a booboo? and downloaded the wrong thing?
That's one of the reasons I use AVG instead - apart from the little icon in the corner you wouldn't know it was there most of the time. Avast is supposedly just as good, but in order to use it you're required to re-register once every 14 months.0
