So, I now think I should uninstall Avira, (incidentally my comp took ages to load today). But when I followed that link by ringo, tp://www.free-av.com/ I found various free anti virus's and thought this was what i required. I have heard of AVG but need THAT link surely.

Have you uninstalled/removed all traces of Norton?
Did you install the Norton 2008 that you were sent?
What are you using as a Firewall?
    Are you running Window XP?

Please press the Flying Windows key(four wavy squares) on your keyboard together with the Pause Break key. Tell us what you see under System and Computer.

Don't try to run more than one AntiVirus at the same time.

My advice is to run a security suite if you are unsure.

Two to consider are: Eset Smart Security or
    Kaspersky Internet Security

Both have full function 30 day trials.

Functional 30 day trials that you then have to pay for. Use AVG it is completely free and updates everyday.

OK, now let me go through this slowly.

I have just uninstalled the Avira thing via Add/Remove, and noticed the comp is now running less slowly.

I did install the norton which was sent and it is running seemingly, as there is an icon in the task bar with something green on it.

Flying windows/pause,break (an area I've never been before) it says XP Home edition, version 2002, service pack 2

Disk space to use 12% 4710mb

Oh, and if it means removing/uninstalling Norton even though I've paid, I have no qualms about that, if AVG is considered more efficient and the better of the two, with no hassle.

Donnie (or anyone else on the verge of helping me), in five mins, we have to go out, but will be back by noon. I'd like to continue this then please. I'm of the opinion that I will be installing this AVG and removing norton, unless I'm told differently, and if this is right, should one be done before the other? or doesn't it matter.

AVG is free as a security package i would not say it was better than Norton.
Nortons big problem is it has used a lot of overheads in past versions less in the latest .
I have tried them all read all the reports and tests and find that AVG and the like are fine for the average user trapping most nastys .
    Users choice as always .
Mine is Kaspersky Internet Security Suite and SuperAntispyware .

What happened to the section under Computer detailing the amount of RAM you have installed?

I'm not a big fan of AVG.

Anyway, go to Start - Control Panel - Security Centre to check on your Anti Virus status.

Anyway, go to Start - Control Panel - Security Centre to check on your Anti Virus status. OK did that and under Security Essentials, it said, the security centre is currently unavailable because the Security Centre has not started up or was stopped..

There were three links:- Int.Options,Windows Firewall,Automatic Updates.

I clicked on Firewall and was told it had been turned off, and recommended it be turned on again, this I did.

Now presumably there is more to do, but I feel one step at a time.

What happened to the section under Computer detailing the amount of RAM you have installed? via the windows/pause, I looked under the comouter section, and could not see any reference to the amount of ram used.

Did you look at the General Tab?

Have you decided what you want to do yet?

Keep Norton that you have paid for or completely remove it and install an alternative?

You must not install any other altenative anti-virus until you have competeley removed Norton (due to conflicts as you have already found) Remeoval tool here.

If youir Norton package was more than just anti-virus, e.g. Norton Security Suite, You will need to also replace your firewall. Just download any new programs before uninstalling, so that you don't go online without any protection!
