  • I bought a cheap one from Asda, cost me £34. The intention was to try it out and if it went ok to buy a more expensive one. Several years later, I've still got the Asda one and make at least one loaf a day. I think you either get on with bread makers or you don't. With me it was a case of trial and error and patience and now it makes great bread - white, wholemeal, pizza dough, whatever. My best friend also bought one but hers has since given up the ghost and she wishes she could still buy a similar if not the same model. My sister in law also got one but didn't have the patience and donated her machine to me for when mine dies.

I think you get what you pay for.

I bought my first BM a few weeks back and got the Tesco one for £25. Couldn't get a decent loaf out of it. After lots of research here and recommendations, I bought the Panasonic SD254 and it's brill - can rely on it for decent loaves and dough for pizza bases.

There is some detailed information on the Panasonic website which explains how their BM's are the best and it makes sense after reading about it.

I think it depends on what you're going to use it for - if it's just for mixing/kneading then cooking in oven, a cheap one should be fine (I've had a cookworks one from argos for years with no problems) but if you're wanting to bake in it, you're probably better going for a more expensive one.
