Virgin problems today anyone?

I am on the supposedly 8meg broadband service with Virgin and have been having connection problems all day. I am using a wireless router which is my own and not supported by Virgin as I've had it for ages.
My problem is the light that says 'internet' on my router keeps going out (it usually just flickers) and of course that means I can't connect to the web. For the first few times it came back on in about 20 minutes but this afternoon it went out for longer so I phoned Virgin to ask if there was a general broadband outtage or if it was just me. They told me that service was OK and that my area was running fine so I must have changed my settings or made some adjustments. We went through the whole scenario of do my phones work (yes) what lights are on (all but the internet one) and what changes have I made (none). In the end it was decided that I must have done something or else my box is broken, I was also told that unless I ran the router direct from the initial BT box by the front door they were surprised I got any connection at all!
It's back on now but has anyone else experienced problems at all with Virgin today, or is it just me?

I had problems last night but this was on their cable service. It seems to have sorted itself out now though.0

Go here, .. http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php# scroll to the very bottom of the ratings, click on the number and see what other Virgin Customers think of their service.
I am amazed that they are still in business to be honest.:rolleyes:0 -

Doesn't really solve the OP's problem? Saying that I can't fault VM, the service is second to none.0 -

Goodness, I've never found that page before! I only ever look at the main status board that always says everything is fine, even on days when I can't pick up email for several hours as virginmail itself says it is not available.
The light remained on for the remainder of yesterday but I lost the ability to do anything after about 10pm so just logged off.
I would be out of Virgin as well if I thought there was something worth changing to and having all the problems of changing my main email address. My 8meg broadband rarely runs faster than 1 meg, sometimes even lower, but then my neighbours on different ISPs say theirs has dropped a lot as well, and even relatives in other parts of the country say their speeds are dropping all the time. I also read an article in the week about problems with speeds generally due to the amount of traffic generated by the BBC Iplayer where they suggest that ISPs may be looking at new packages for the future, so I might wait a little longer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. would your neighbour be with talktalk or tiscali by any chance? iplayer is causing huge problems for some ISPs, generally the ones which offer 'the moon on a stick' service, suddenly non-technical people are moving large quantities of data and the infrastructure is not there to support it. This is NOT an iplayer problem (as tiscali would have you believe) but an ISP problem, a decent service with reasonable data allowance is not possible for a tenner a month or less (on ipstream).Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Hmm, I think I did hear them mention it was Tiscali actually.

Yeah thats a load of rubbish really. ISP's are looking for an easy target to foot their bandwidth bills. They don't want to prosecute the people downloading the illegal material so they focus on the company who provides legitimate content! lol0 -
Soolin,
I've been on Virgin bb for about two months. Initially it was ok with speeds usually close to 2 meg but falling to about 1 meg at peak times. However, in the past couple of days it has fallen to under 0.2 meg all the time which is absolutely hopeless.
(We are in North Yorkshire area and use a bt extension point about 20 feet from the main wall socket.)0 -
maxi, try plugging the router directly into the master socket itself, after first removing the faceplate, i appreciate this may be a little troublesome, but it does prove whether internal wiring is the issue.
Get (and post) your line stats (att, snr, connection speed) from the router both before and after trying the master socket, more info hereUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
