If you have ANY equipment that can receive a television signal you MUST have a licence I'm guessing you'll be needing a colour one too if your viewing through a pc.

And before you ask YES they can track you!
You may even have had your details forwarded to the tv licence dept when you purchased the card if you bought it new.

Its a legal requirement for the retailer of any equipment capable to receiving TV signals to take details and send the forms to the TV licensing people, if they don't and get caught its a £5000 fine.

Ummm... I've bought a few TV cards at computer fairs for various peeps and never been asked for address even when I've paid cash.....OK I have a valid TV licence but that irrelevant in this case as no-one has ever asked to see it when I've purchased TV cards...Not implying or recommend anyone does any illegal activities (I pay for my license and so should everyone else) but can anyone explain how the BBC/TV licensing peeps know when students don't have a license? I can understand the fact they can do an address scan (had them come around once as I'd bought a TV and the license was in my wife’s name, apologised and left) but if they don't have a registered address is it just chance/luck of the drawer?

And to the original poster as has already be mentioned....Yes..... And Dunno

And on that point... buy one, why suffer the hassle and criminal conviction if you get caught

I remember when I was a student one of the colleges (St. Johns) asked all the students to put their TV's in the cellars while the detector vans were on the prowl.

I bought a DVD player from Tescos' yesterday and the checkout girl told me that had I not had a club card I would have had to fill in a form for TV licencing.
Naturally I pointed out that it wasn't a receiver, but she said it was because you would have to connect it to one! Didn't bother to persue the monior argument

I think students have been required to pay too much recently. Perhaps the student bodies should lobby the BBC for a student discount. The Charter for the BBC is up for re-negotiation so they have to be seen to be responding to the needs of the people.

Given the amount of TV students get to watch, maybe they should pay more instead......if they stopped watching morning TV at least the BBC might consider to stop making such daytime crap wasting cash, maybe they could repeat the previous evenings stuff instead for what the students missed whilst out at the pub?
