Thanks for everyones' help - just rung him to give him the instructions, but he's just taken it back. :o

Apparently he had a few problems with it - don't know if that was just down to not reading the instructions properly or if it was just a bit complicated, but he has a fairly old TV and the colours and picture through the recorder were rather washed out looking compared to through Sky/terrestrial, and it refused to transmit in anything other than widescreen, which his TV couldn't cope with. Also couldn't get it to record using videoplus.

Yes, the HDD is only80GB, but as said before these can be easily replaced for a larger one, and as I did say above, the Currys/Maplin model DOES NOT play DIVX. Perhaps I need to use bigger typing next time :D

Talkshop you dont need to be rude, your post did not make sense and I still can't work out what you are saying.

My reply was to aminchom, I was just saying I bought the same one in currys which it is also a Liteon 5045 and certainly not a Yamada:

Currys HERE
Ebuyer HERE

The currys one with discount code can be bought for 219.99 delivered.

You said it was not the same model, I can only assume you were talking about the curry and Ebuyer machines as that was what I was discussing with aminchom, this is wrong as they are the same model, both Liteon 5045.

I had already said in my post the Liteon did not play DIVx and it was not a problem so I was not sure what point you were making by repeating that fact and assumed (clearly wrongly) you were suggesting the Maplin one did play DIVx and was therfore a better offer.

Perhaps I should be the one to use large text then you wont need to repeat what I had already said in my post.

The above not being the case (does not play DIVx) there is no advantage to the Maplin one as its only £20 less and you certainly wont get a 160GB HDD for £20 and even if you could the hassle of fitting it and invalidation of warranty would not justify it.

It appears this machine may play DIVx with the firmware update, all a bit technical but:

14. What is the status of the Divx movies?
After our global FAE’s repeat test of flashing the V299/227/224 of firmware, we have the feedback in hand as below:
*DivX 5.0
720x576 (1.250:1) [~5:4]
777 kb/s
192 kb/s (96/ch x 2 ch) CBR 44100 Hz
played fine
*DivX 3.11 Fast-Motion
320x240 (1.333:1) [=16:12]
234 kb/s
128 kb/s (64/ch x 2 ch) CBR 44100 Hz and
*Divx 3.11 movie:
Video codec: DivX 3.11
Audio codec: MP3
Frame size: 352 x 288
Frame rate: 25 f/s
Bit rate: 829.688 Kbits/s
Sound sampling rate: 44.1 KHz
played fine
*DivX 4 (OpenDivX)
720x576 (1.250:1) [~5:4]
869 kb/s
192 kb/s (96/ch x 2 ch) CBR 44100 Hz
played fne
*VCD
played fine
*DVD
played fine

11. Why is the FF function in Divx movies abnormal?
AVI - CD: Such functions are strictly limited by hard ware chip set, but with it upgrading to firmware 0229, it offers 1 minute jump per press on remote, that's currently the player can offer now!

The LiteOn LVW5045 from Currys is not the same model. That one is a Umax/Yamada and does not play DIVX movies. Maplin are selling a clone of that for £199.99

Try http://www.area450.com/softwaremods/recorder-r8hpregionhack.html for a free remote control hack - should work, I reckon (as owner of that site ;))

Anyway, back to the topic of the thread and the question that reopened the discussion yesterday - are there any multi region hacks for the Medion 160GB HD Recorder Medion 80857 as sold in Aldi from yesterday

Clayts - thanks for trying and offering a potential soloution to this. Unfortunately I have tried this with no joy.

Any other thoughts Clayts
or anyone

Are you sure the model number is right I cant get anything on a simple google search with:

Medion 80857
.
• Number is actually MD 80857 rather than medion 80857, but other than that it is the only number I can find and I believe itto be correct.

Thanks for trying
