Warnings and things to watch for

  • The latest item to receive the phone treatment is the Apple Ipod Music Player.

Bidders are given loads of information on the Ipod and hidden somewhere in the text is a note that you're only buying a link to a cheap or free Ipod website. That is just phase one of the scam.

Phase two is that the link on offer is a (pyramid)marketing site which requires you to register your details. Every time a certain (high) number of users register they release one Ipod to the user at the top of the list. You can imagine how long it would take for you to get to the top - in the meantime you would be getting all sorts of garbage e-mails from the marketing company.

    I bought a video boxset ...
So I now have this untruthful negative feedback and it makes my feedback score very low (because its done by percentage) because I don't sell much stuff.

Use two ebay accounts, one for selling and one for buying. That way you can leave honest feedback about the stuff you buy without worrying that the seller is going leave negative feedback that will affect your sales.

I have just read in one of the magazines I subscribe to, a letter about a bad paypal transaction.  The writer of the letter had purchased something from ebay in germany and paid using paypal.  The seller failed to send out the goods.  This is the reply from them as stated in the magazine in respnse to refunding the buyer.

"if the seller has withdrawn the funds and does not fund account further by the time the case is resolved, the case is closed with no recovery paypal does not have the legal right (without an order from the court) to take funds from a sellers bank or credit card account"

It seems that the seller can transfer the money to their bank and there it is safe!

You have described the situation with a dishonest seller, what about the scenario where a dishonest purchaser lies about not receiving the goods. Would you like them to have access to your credit card or bank account?

I give buyers no choice and always send goods out by a postal method that has adequate insurance and a tracking method to ensure delivery. But to protect myself against dishonest buyers, I have several Paypal accounts. When I receive the funds for the item sold through ebay into the account shown in the ebay listing, I send the money from one Paypal account to another, and then when it hits the end one, withdraw it to my bank account. If the dishonest buyer tries a chargeback, Paypal will have to untangle the money trail, before realising their is no money there. Just to make sure the first Paypal account is also never used to pay for anything, so is not associated with a credit card or bank account.

As far as I know you can now trace an item by just sending it 1st class.

Something to do with your recipt and the persons postcode!.....

    not sure how it works.....

Unfortunately there is no trackable method if you just use 1st or 2nd class. The postcode and receipt thingy is a proof of postage and something I always make sure I get. The Post office automatically print out a receipt and if you ask them they will add the house number and post code of the person it is going to and that supposedly gives you proof of posting should you need to make a claim against the post office for loss.

However for paypal protection that isn't enough you must have a method that is trackable and gives proof of delivery and the cheapest way of doing that is by sending it recorded delivery which costs an additional 65p over and above the actual cost of posting. The recorded delivery slip has a unique reference number that can be tracked and traced via the royal mail website.

I have been selling a mobile phone on ebay (Nokia 7600 ;)) and have been recieving a lot of emails like this:
Hello seller, Am keenly interetsed in purchasing your item which is urgently
needed,i'll be making payment for it with money order via western union auction
payment/bidpay,Am ready to pay $340. The money order would take 7-10 days to get
to you once it is approved by bidpay, immediately the payment is approved i'll
would want to pick up the item with UPS which means i'll be enitrely responsible
for shipping of the item .Just to let you know that the item is going to my
fiance who is presently in Africa where she temporarily works with UNICEF and
i'll love the item toget to her without delay at all. Thanks once again for your
    time. Regards

Im just wondering is this a scam or not? All the emails say the phone is going to Africa and all have the words "Western Union" as payment in it.

    Scam or not?
