PayPal is NOT free for non-business sellers, or it wasn't last time I looked. As a private seller, it costs me money to accept PayPal payment. .
it is / was free in a sense. There's is / was a basic account which is / was free. You need to upgrade to a premier account to accept payments from credit cards which is when they start charging.0 -

I actually ran one of these auctions to see how many people would be taken in by it. The item was a very desirable IPod and there were pages and pages of description lifted from the official website (always be very suspicous where you see this) with a small note in the middle about the link thing. There were 23 bids placed and the top bid was £165. The person seemed quite serious about buying it until I asked if she understood it was a link he/she was buying.
He/She was lucky he/she hadn't paid. Many people would pay instantly by PayPal (I *WOULD* have refunded the money).
Always on a phone/Ipod/laptop or simular item press Ctrl+F and type in link. You should be able to spot these scams that way. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Steven H, aren't you covered by paypals buyer payment protection?. What about getting onto your credit card company to see if they can do anything about it?0
-
possibly depends on the auction, Paypal or the credit card company won;t do anything if he paid for what was advertised.0

Another thing to watch out is people advertising region 2 dvd's. Especially on films that have not been released in the UK and rare films such as Walt Disney deleted titles.
These ARE NOT region 2 dvd's they are region zero from eastern countries eg Malaysia, Japan.
Some times people would not be the wiser as these would play in any DVD player and the quality in most cases would be near perfect.
With regards to feedback, again be very cautious with DVD sellers. many many buyers get refunded when the DVD's are found out to be region zero by clever buyers and STILL give the seller a good feedback !!!!!!
Feedback's with notes to say: e.g excellent quality, as described, etc are better than prompt buyer, excellent buyer, etcThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

JUST USE it .. / don't be made a SUCKER by PAYPAL !
...without any add. cost of PAYPAL / in ANY CASE .. 3,4 % + * for any SELLER!! ... yes YOU! as well (in case your buyer has opened a 'Quick + Conv. account . with PAYPAL using his Credit Card .. and in due course 'his payments - towards PAYPAL! ' I think the RATE (3,4%) Paypal charges - is outrageous & only works with the 'less financial exper. EBAY clientele ... THEIR target group ...
Ebay says. ..
- A swift and easy way to pay your seller is by Bank Transfer / this works with any UKBank - 'you just drop in!' , or even immediate and ... in the 'off hours' .. via an ONLINE/Banking- account ... and is free ===>>>> NO!! addtional charge' ...fast, fair and pleasant for all concerned

I gotta say, I too fell for one of the £20.00 phone scams, found out what it really consisited of about 2 days later and managed to get a full refund. Paypal and Ebay had contacted the buyer and said they wanted tracking of the items he advertised. As he couldn't do this the choice was to refund or no longer trade. He chose to refund... (and send me a dodgy email)
I then immediately fell for the DVD R2 one... to which I am still waiting for delivery.... Hmmm..... :-/
Saying that, I know many people who constantly use Ebay with no problem whatsoever. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Also, boycott those who still have the cheek to charge for paypal (its free except for when business users receive payment) when in reality it is a bigger benefit for the seller.
If the seller is a business user then they should absorb the cost, especially ifthe item is costly.
Ebay now have rules to the effect that sellers are not allowed to put on an extra charge for using Paypal.
If a seller states this then you can report them to Ebay.

raeble
Never, ever pay by wire transfer i.e western union or bank transfer. Always pay by Paypal or similar or use your credit card. Do not use a debit card.
Hmm, why not ? Someone has just offered to pay me by direct transfer (I supply my bank details) - scam ?
Not convinced by Paypal - some definite dodgy stories.
Can anyone explain why paying by direct bank transfer is not recommended? I've done it & can't see a problem, the seller provided his bank details which was no more information than there is on a cheque.
