wow, thanks for your help guys, I thought it was the end of this thread yesterday. Crystal Clear, I dont think im able to port numbers when im jumping on a new 'cashback by redemption' deal. Basically im currently paying 3.99 a month for 500xnet mins and 100 txts, at the end of year, it goes up to 30 a month, thats when im going to cancel and take out another 3 deal (whatever is going at the time).
Thanks Phonix but to be honest, I want to keep it as simple as possible. Thought about and it PAYG option seems viable, no monthly line rental (as opposed to land line) and easy voicemail to take customers messages and then call them back on my 3 phone.

ok read all the thread and now waiting for the cash account to print so I got some time and will help you dynamikz. to help a fellow computer science graduate NB: you better not be the one who just started dropping leaflets and stuff round here fixing computers trying to steal my customers / potential customers :-< :->.
OK here is the best solution that is the cheapest way for you from what I gather you want
As the other person said get a VOIP line. The first one https://www.sipgate.co.uk/ is free but it seem that goes down every so often but hey it is free and does work most of the time. Than as the other person said you get an email to inform you of a miss call. Now this is the trick, you get that "email" sent as an SMS to your handset. That is what I used to do when I was aboard. You can than call them up from the mobile and contact is made. At a very cheap rate for both parties. On the answermachine have it say something like "this will send me a SMS to my mobile to call you back. Thank you for your time and I will call you back shortly. beep." Than hopefully they will hang up and wait for your call. If that sound a good solution I can look for an email to sms gateway for you.
This way you will have a constant landline number, and easy way for them to contact. Also about the cashback deal. The way round it is as follows. When you call up to cancel your contract and assume they do not offer you a good deal. (at the moment three is offering 6-9 months half price line rental and a free I think it is LG8120.) Which for the hassle of not changing, cashback etc might be worth taking. Anyway if they do not offer an acceptable deal you get the PAC and you transfer it to Vodafone. You can call their transfer line which they will give you a simcard free of charge. Stay on there for 28 days than get a PAC code and transfer back to Three and take up the transfer deal.0
