  • The petporte actually seemed to solve our cat's nervousness - when he first arrived as a stray and we decided to keep him we were a bit clueless and very naively installed a cheap flap that opened for any cat. We'd never noticed many other cats on the street but suddenly they were all coming in for a bite to eat! Rocky would spend his time hiding behind a pile of clothes in the spare room and constantly looking at the back door when he was downstairs with us so we quickly ordered the petporte and after a couple of suspicious entries and exits he had no problems with it. He would sit and eat his food by the back door and see other cats coming up his ramp, tapping the flap and unable to get in and wouldn't even flinch so I think he realised he was safe. With the old flap he'd run upstairs as soon as he spotted other cats in the garden through the backdoor window.

Now he spends his time on the sofa downstairs and doesn't even bother looking up when we can hear other cats tapping away trying to get in!

She said that cat behaviourists didn't like them as they add to the nervousness - you may know that other cats can't get in but your can't won't

Our cat definately knows other cats can't get in her PP flap.
She only started peeing in the house after another cat got stuck in the house with her after I stupidly left the old flap on in only.
A couple of times after installing the PP flap she could see others trying to get in so ran and hid. She soon realised though that they couldn't get in and now she just sits and looks at them as they paw the flap.

  • Has anyone tested the strength of the door lock on the Pet Porte? We've got a Staywell 300 with a manual lock. The problem is that one of my cat simply yanks at the flap until it bends enough to jump over the lock. He then goes outside and gets minced by one of the local toms - something I'm trying to prevent!

Also, has anyone installed a PP into a door that previously had a Sureflap installed in it? If so, how well did the PP fit and did it need any extra DIY?

We too used to have a staywell flap and Lily used to be able to get her claws under the edge of the flap and open it when locked. As of yet she hasn't been able do this with the Petporte because the flap isn't flush to the edge of the fittings, it's kind of recessed.

If you see this picture you can see what I mean... http://www.zooplus.it/bilder/porta/per/gatti/petporte/microchip/1/112885_Katzenklappe_1.jpg
A cat would need very long claws to hook under the door of this flap.

We have the first version of the PP and hubby needed to make the staywell hole bigger for the PP but apparently the latest version of the PP fits the hole a staywell flap leaves behind.

    Hope that helps :)

  • Hello
I'm looking into buying a Pet Porte but have some questions I'm hoping you guys can help with.
This is my 1st cat and therefore having to change my back door to accomodate a catflap! I love the idea of the Pet Porte but as the door people will be installing the catflap as they build the door we need to get it right.
So, I was wondering does the PP only run off mains power? Does it have the option to run off batteries? I know it goes to batteries as a back up. We dont have any power points around our back door. How long is the power lead?

All your questions answered here http://www.petporte.com/faqSmartFlap.htm
Note these answers are for the newest version, the Smartflap.

    Hope that helps :)

I sent Pet Porte & Microchip Catflaps this

I purchased a Pet Porte from Microchip Cat Flaps, in late July 10, so just over a month ago.
I would have purchased from you, but you didn't have any of the larger door old style ones & they did.

So I bought one from them & have had nothing but trouble since. Firstly they sent me a European type plug with it instead of a UK one. Initally they promised a replacement in two days time. That didn't arrive & then I had trouble getting a response from them, I could only get their answerphone & email & my messages just didn't get returned. When I was getting no response I left a complaint on their Facebook page, they removed my message & eventually nearly 2 weeks later I received the UK plug.

Then there was a second problem where it seemed not to be scanning or not to have an electric supply some of the time (indeed much of the time), the cats were getting locked out constantly, often at night. We didn't dare use any of the settings which display a light because we were having trouble enough with them having confidence to use it with it not working we didn't want to put them off it further if we used additional settings to block it.

However we did buy it for the night setting so we decided to try it. Great we thought as long as there is a lighted display we know there is power to it & its working. Imagine my dismay the next day when I came home from work & discovered that at 6.30pm the cat flap had decided it was night time & had gone into night mode despite being day outside. So I searched the web & found instructions on how to adjust the Smartflap settings. Hoping these might also apply to the first model I tried to adjust it, but their is no adjustment on this model, so night mode kicks in at 6.30pm on a (almost still summers) evening in the sunny south east of England in perfect day light.

So I turned night mode off & applied it at night! My husband got up in the morning & all lights were off, power was not going into or being taken by the unit.

So I have a microchip cat flap that works only occasionally, a might mode I can't "set & forget it" I have to manually turn it on at dusk & rise at dawn (even on the weekend) to disable. The cats have only been recently chipped & when we fiddle with the the power in lead it works, until the next time!

I have left a message on Microchip Cat Flaps answer phone, but they say their guarantee is 30 days & after that the maunfactors 3 year warrantly comes into play.

I really need to be able to adjust the day/night settings as 6.30pm is still bright in Surrey this past week & I need them not to get locked out at night! They are pedigree Exotic shorthairs not streetwise moggies.

    Microchip catflaps replied with this

There is no need to contact Pet Porte regarding this.

There are a few inaccuracies in your email that I would like to clear up by speaking with you.

Please let me know your telephone number and I will call you on Monday to resolve the matter.

    Best regards,

    James.

    I replied with this

If you had read my email properly you would see I have supplied 3 telephone numbers & my address at the end.

There are no inaccuracies in my email, I did wait nearly 2 weeks for the correct UK cable/plug.

I emailed Pet Porte because your recorded message (option 3) says you offer a 30 day money back guarantee & there is a 3 year manufactors warranty on the cat flap, hence I emailed the manufactorer.

As there was no call today (as promised) I sent this

    Hi James

Its 5.25pm & I'm dissapointed not to have spoken to you today.
I do have an answer-phone on my mobile, but no messages have been received.
This is exactly what I referred to in my first email, about not being able to contact anyone at Microchip Cat flaps & no one returning messages.

Pet Porte haven't responed at all & Microchip Cat Flaps have failed to get back to me when they said they would:(

    UPDATE

James from Microchip Catflaps called me Tuesday. He was willing to send a replacement but I was happy to take a new AC adapter to try that first. We have sealed in the cat flap & I would rather not have to pick the sealant out & change it over if its not the flap.
    Adapter arrived today (Wednesday):T
Will let you know how my problem goes. James also sent me instructions to alter the daylight settings on my model:T
Fingers crossed that works too this evening.

Pet Porte also called today & were really nice, said if I had anymore trouble at all to go through them. She did assure me the new flap would fit my hole (think she was thinking ahead incase the adapter doesn't work). She said it will, I'm relieved about that. I was worried if they had to replace it & I had to start changing the hole size.

So all is well now with customer service, hopefully the first carry on was just a glitch with James & hopefully the new AC will fix it:D
  • oh I can't believe you are still having problems with the flap.

We use it with the green (in) lock disabled all the time, because when we first got it, it didn't pick up one of the cats very well. Disabling the lock isn't difficult on the smart flap at least, you just have to disengage the "ball" from the "socket" in this version, when the inside part of the flap has the face off.

This might at least mean the cats don't get locked out at night. But doesn't solve any of the other problems. Good luck with that. I'm sure it'll get resolved eventually.

PS did you know that this James is the person who first "invented" the idea of personalised ringtones?!!! Guess we can't all be perfect ;-)

    ANOTHER UPDATE

Its not plug. I keep night mode switch on 24/7 now, the light is a comfort signal I know its always on. But it scans sometimes & doesn't on others. If I only had one cat I might suspect the chip had travelled, but not when you have more than one.

It doesn't scan & bleep more than it does:(

I've emailed Pet Porte:( Waiting for a reply.

Gotta unseal & change the thing:mad: I when they replace.
  • Helloo,

So we've invested in a Pet Porte- Yippee! or so I thought.
Hubby bought it from Ebay (trying to save money) and it has arrived today with a 2 pin plug and apparently its not got Battery Backup! Is this the old model? And what's with the 2 pin plug is that standard?
I was expecting a 3 pin UK plug with Battery Back Up!

I need to ascertain if I should be shouting at the Ebay seller??
