Remember there can be more to cost/value than just the price...

To that end, I'd recommend Pet Planet for their customer service too - it is excellent.

I found that there was not much difference in the prices, so decided to buy from the manufacturer. It arrived very quickly.
I needn't have worried about the cats finding it difficult to use; they actually find it easier than the old magnetic one, although it is a bit of a squeeze fot the biggest cat (diet time I think).
One month on, we have had no more problems from other cats coming in, and no problems from the flap itself.

One potential caveat about buying from the manufacturer is that as they are based in Jersey your purchase is not covered by any of our consumer legislation - Distance Selling Regs, Sales of Goods Act etc.

That said, I've found their customer service (and of course the product itself) very good so it may well be a moot point - but such protection can sometimes be handy to fall back on should you need it. I believe PetPorte has recently been bought by an American company but hopefully that won't change the service side of things.

  • Never thought of that - but can reiterate that their customer service is very good - no questioning or trying to get out of anything just lots of offers of help and free replacement parts when my scanner seemed to lose scanning power. As outlined in my previous post I was sent a new coil, new board and new power supply free of charge very quickly to address my problem - and replacing the coil solved the problem.

I actually bought my (original version) flap a couple of years ago on offer from James Winsoar at www.microchipcatflaps.co.uk and it took 1-2 months to come as he was having trouble getting stock in to meet demand at the time. Despite buying from elsewhere I was still advised to contact the manufacturer direct when I had initial queries anyway so not sure it would've made much difference where I'd got it from as I was referred back to them anyway!

If I were to buy the new Smartflap now I'd probably check it was in stock and purchase it from anywhere reputable with a special price offer but still be telephoning Jersey headquarters with any queries.
  • If anyone has the instruction manual for a Smartflap (the newer one with the round hole?) handily lying around, please help!

Last night we had our first uninvited feline guest in (that we know of) since installing it - I guess it must have tailgated one of ours... I'd like to try shortening the time the flap stays unlocked, but we are decorating at the moment and our manual is buried somewhere! If someone could post how to change it, I'd be most appreciative.
  • Hi Jonesy!

    Unplug the Petporte
    Hold down the red button
Plug it in again (still holding red button)
    Release the red button

Flap will beep once for each second the door will stay open for. Repeat this process until it stays open for the required number of seconds.

To extend do the same thing but using the green button.

I had to do it with other half as plug is too far away to hold red button at same time!

I have the old Petporte and sometimes get some tailgating issues with next door's cat (who we feed when neighbours away and seems convinced he should be living in our house too as he's constantly at our flap wanting to come in!). I shortened open time and that has helped. But what I also noticed when I was outside gardening one day was that our cat approached the flap and as it beeped I could hear it outside ( think Rocky was opening flap at that point) - so did next door's cat! He came flying over the fence trying to get in while it was still unlocked. So I turned the beep off as well as shortening open time.
  • Ah just realised you have the new Smartflap - not sure if procedure is the same as old one for changing opening times!

Thanks for that - I hadn't read the thread in a while so I'd forgotten they were posted - most handy

Discovered today that actually the green switch had become stuck, so the flap was basically open to all. Took the front off and jiggled it around - seems to be ok now - will keep an eye on it.
