Disposing of a car
Options
I am about to buy a car and will need to get rid of my current car. I don't think it will be worth anything for Part Exchange as it is high mileage and fairly tatty. (The reason I am getting rid of it is because the cost of repairs are getting too high). What are my options for getting rid of it?? Will it cost me anything? Can I make any money from it?

it doesnt matter if it isnt worth anything to you or the garage as p/x - you have to pay most breakers in my area £30 to take a car off your hands, so just giving it to a dealer in p/x for your new car, means they have the expense of disposing of it
or contact your local fire station, they often take donations of old cars, to practise on
or if there is still some MOT left on the vehicle, why not try selling it, even £20 is better than nothing, for someone to take it away

Or look in your local newspaper and near the back pages you have many people who are willing to give cash for cars and they come and collect the cars from you.
have a look!

Try putting it on ebay with a clear and honest description of it. I've seen some real wrecks (and described as such) fetch £100+.0

Back in Great Yarmouth where I used to live it seemed to be the custom to park the car in a layby and set fire to it....
I sold my old nova for £100 to a guy. It had a flat battery and was barely on it's last legs...wheels... He wanted it for getting his tools around for a month till he got a van so took it as it was (got a passerby to jump-start it). I later saw it months later looking and sounding much healthier
People will buy anything!! I'd say put an ad in the car window with a nice low price or "open to offers" and wait for the calls.0 -
Park it in a lay-by during the day, with a big For Sale sign in the window, also advertise any remaining months of MOT or Tax.
Do a car boot sale, with the vehicle (as long as its still taxed MOT'd) sticking a big, big sign in window. Making money from car boot anyway.:j0 -
Yep i'd say Ebay is probably the best route for disposal - you'd be suprised at what people will pay good money for!0

Whatever you do - make sure the V5 (log book) is filled in correctly, when it goes.
Or you'll give the postman a bad back, carrying all those parking tickets/speeding fines/no tax penalties!!

You could put it in the Auto Trader. It's cheaper to advertise in the Under £1000 section and in my experience it will soon shift. There are always people on the look out for cheap cars.
Another even cheaper alternative is to put a card in the Newsagent/Post Office window where you live. It will cost you about 50p and may do the trick.0 -
You'd be suprised what they will take as p/x, they gave me £300 for my old Cavvy, the engine didn't correspond to the high mileage that the bodywork had done...............yet they still took it!
An ex got PAID £30 for a mondeo estate that he blew up (eejit!) at a massive metal recycling place (European Metal Recycling, or something like that) near to us.
Also a mate of mine does Stock/Banger racing, they are always on the look out for free or very cheap cars...............put an ad in, you never know!Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts.
