Thats much better than £106 - many thanks Badger Lady! :D
Which website did you use to find those if I want to book and check times etc...

You can use www.thetrainline.com - just select each leg of the journey separately to get the cheaper prices.

  • First ever post so apologies if I get it wrong...
I always cook some cheap dishes before the festival and then freeze them. OK, it's a little heavy to carry, but well worth it when you tuck into a nice homemade curry on the first night. The frozen food keeps your other supplies cool (including beer!) for at least the first day if not the first two.

    Hi all
as a seasoned (old!!) festival head the one thing that i reckon is indispensible is free! I always take an pile of supermarket carrier bags.
    • bin - for all your rubbish
    • wellies - liner between socks and boots
    • water carrier - if no holes!
    • Day sack
    • wet clothes storage
    • help clean up litter around site on the monday reality check!!!!
I appreciate that some might say that we are trying to do away with plastic but if you've got them then reuse them!
    have fun and keep safe!

  • Here's a list of london festivals that are free
    http://johnnyvoid.wordpress.com/outdoors-and-free-london-free-festival-listings-2008/

They tend to take place in the big parks and although the names aren't quite as big... you'll still see many of the same bands that are on the festival curcuit anyway.

You'll be able to take you own food/drink and if it rains.... simply go to the pub instead.

I have a cunning way of taking your own alcohol in, dont know if its allowed to post but Im sure it will be moved if not......

Go to the supermarket and buy yourself a box of country manor wine (yes, it tastes like dishwater, but its not the wine you are after!).

Country Manor comes in a silver bag with a tap on the end. When you get to the festival, take the bag out of the box, wrap a jumper around it and shove it in your rucksack. When they feel around in your bag they will just feel a jumper because the bag the booze is in is soft.

Drink awful wine at leisure. When you get back to the tent carefully prize off the tap on the bag (careful not to puncture the bag!!), refill with Vodka redbull or alcohol of your choosing and reseal.

Worked every time at Download :D

Shop around for bargains on camping equipment, but take notice of the quality of what you are buying too, the more use you can get out of something the better value it is.

Poundland do vacuum bags, a fantastic idea for space saving, put all your clothes in it, squeeze them down and you have more space in your bag for other stuff, less journeys to the car!

If you do take a 'disposable' tent, please do pack it up at the end and donate it to Give Me Shelter, there is usually information in the programme and on the website about how you do it, at Leeds fest you can take it to the campsite disco/offices which are in each section of the campsite. They are then checked over and donated to countries in crisis, like the current situation in Burma for instance.

Best money saving advice is to BE PREPARED! Buy as much as possible before you go, it's a pain carrying it to the campsite, but you will save a lot of money not buying onsite. No glass bottles so decant everything into plastic and you will be fine. Most festivals are making more of an effort to offer recycling facilities now so remember to 'leave nothing but footprints' and consider that the land you are partying on has a purpose for the rest of the year too.

The best money saving plans come at the end of the festival really, if you can hang on till people are leaving there can be rich pickings among what is left. You can often find abandoned tents, equipment, cans of food and beer, you name it! Be careful because they also leave some less pleasant stuff, but you can find some great stuff if you aren't too proud to look around.

Summer Sports Set - trampoline, swingball and paddling pool worth £100 :T
  • this June will be my third Glastonbury, living local it keeps travel costs down, and having friends with passes allows for us to be driven to pedestrian gates. Realising that not everyone can do this, other ways to save money can be:

-Cheap Waterproofs and Wellies - Farm supply centres such as Mole Valley Farmers, i did this last year and got a jacket and trousers for around £15.

    - Food - Boil in the bag army rations. Last year we had a big stash we bought off a friend, but are amazing and really nice. Try perhaps Ebay for these, they aren't too cheap, but can work out cheaper than the £5 per meal you pay at festivals.

-Tents - I found my Eurohike something on sale mid summer last year between glasto and reading for £60, saving a good £30 which i sreally good value for the size of it.

Another tip is to go in large groups. This year there is a group of around 40 of us going to Glastonbury and so helps with travel as well as communial things such as Gazebos. We are currently looking at getting a 9m X 3m off ebay for around £80- £100.

    Hope this helps

I suppose climbing over the fence wouldn't be in the MSE ethos, but getting a job at the festival would ... get in for free AND earn some money :D
