When OH went self employed a few years back, he was unable to get his head around what was needed and what needed to be noted etc., and he gave them a call. They sent a chap round to the house to help. He was brilliant. He sat there amongst the MANY colourful booklets they issue and said "don't need that one; don't need this one; nah, you don't need that one either". It was a godsend.
He also went through which parts of your house could be included in your figures if you were doing some parts of the job from home. I can't remember exactly what they were, but it was a percentage reduction on utility bills (gas, water, telephone, lighting) for each room that was used.
It really would be time invested well if you gave them a call to see if they can come out to see you and certainly when your pulling together your year end figures. Our chap used to love coming to ours coz we live in a beautiful part of the country and he said it was a lovely morning out of the office and he got tea and toast when arrived. :T
Not done this personally ....I met a lady at a business fair from the small accounts team who was very keen to come and visit us - said it would be a nice day out...before I agreed I mentioned it to a Business Link guy - he advised against it as he viewed HMRC as something to keep at arm's length at all costs....I'm afraid things may have changed over the years... I reckon the folks on here can debate the accounts stuff through for you - there's plenty of experience. Personally I'm a big spreadsheet fan...don't go near ledger books as you'll find yourself tying yourself up in knots about double-entry bookkeeping issues that you simply don't need to know!
Changing subjects...how much do you make from your gigs? I'm looking into playing live again and wondered if it could be a net earner. For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070 -

Nothing at the moment. Its only cover bands that will earn the money and even them its gotta be the right kind of cover band. Ste used to be in a band that would cover 60s-90s stuff and would earn about £100-£150 a night. He did get offered the millenium gig which would have earned them £1000 each but the guitarist didnt want to do it.Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Oh wow well done, is it something you think you can take on with CAB and OU, Argos and exisiting AS? What work is involved in it?
As for ledgers versus spreadsheets I like spreadsheets too. And Bandroi's explanation is what I would have gone for. Keep it simple. As for the "pack" they are going to send you I suspect you will find all the info that will be in that here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/0 -
