  • Hi all

I'm still not in a postion to answer my own question about how I've fared with stocks and shares over the years. All I know is that I've always sold at a 'good' profit but I really would like to know by how much - I think I'm never going to be able to pin it down though and it's my own fault as my record keeping is not as good as I thought :o

Can't wait for Thursday as it's pay day and I'm going to make a nice chunky OP. I always really enjoy OP day but this one will be even nicer as I will be OP'ing by more due to benefitting from the rate drop although next month will be even nicer as that is when I will get the 1.5% reduction.

On the BTL front my new rate will kick in from January. I've never made Op's on the BTL but will be starting this in January as the payments are due to go down then and I will make them up so that the 'usual' amount still gets paid.

I'm still on track to get the IO down to 90k and the whole amount down to 180k by the year end which I'll be thrilled about:T

I thought you had spreadsheets for everything (is it only me then)????

Certainly for funds and equities keeping track on investment and costs, value etc is necessary to review in the cold light of day but, perhaps now is the time to start recording the future purchases?

    Enjoy the OP day(s)

Hi Stuart, yes, so did I think I had spreadsheet for everything:rotfl: Where I'm having trouble is when I have sold shares and received a balance share certificate and then not kept track of what the original share purchase price was in relation to balance certificate IUSWIM

I can answer some of my questions so here goes
    • How much I have invested in my life in S&S's (over last 16 years)
      • £63,638.29 (£7200 of this in the last two months)
    • How much have I already received from share sales in last 16 years
      • £53,371.63
    • How much current S&S worth
      • £21,767 (worth approx four times that 4 months ago:eek: )
I'm still working on how much profit I've made and how much current holdings originally cost me. I doubt I'll ever exactly know how much profit I've made as when I first started to sell (young and daft!) I didn't really keep records but I'm happy to confirm that in latter years I have done so (I hope that redeems me in your eyes Stuart;) )

When I worked out how much I've received in sales I just couldn't believe it - I know some of it went towards two house moves but I think that only accounts for about £22k and I'm ashamed to say I've no idea what I spent the rest on  but the sales were just all smallish dribs and drabs over approx a 10 year time frame, but still, makes you gulp doesn't it!

My view has always been that the shares, S&S ISA's I have etc are there for the long term so although the value has dropped dramatically in recent times and not too concerned and I think the numbers show that all in all I've not done too bad over the last 16 years.

ABTT in my eyes you're perfect.... :o :A

What about the dividends you received as well, as I would expect these will have added up over that time too?

My spreadsheet for our ISA S&S records each purchase per month, units and costs, then it is easy to see the average price this has led to vs. current price if sold. In addition I then record a sale and the profit/loss made on that to combine to give a current status....

Whilst we are 47.40% down as of market close last night, this has only been running from June 2006 (UK Smaller Co) and the Latin American not started until March 2008 and Russian / Greater Russia June 2008 when I sold out UK 250 Co units and bought just at the wrong time.... hence you can see why they are in this position!

Still, from March 2010 if I hit the aggressive MF date, then we can start pumping more into S&S and Cash ISA, but we'll trickle feed £220 per month into the S&S funds until then, getting some improvement in average unit price due to the pound averaging (I hope!).

Fortunately, this is not our pension fund (we have company scheme & Local Gov) but they are intended for long term to about 2016-2018 and beyond as my retirement date will be 2030 if I go all the way to 65

    Lol, perfect - I wish:rolleyes:

Re dividends - I have included those in purchase price/holdings as well, though you did make me realise that in my figures I have not accounted for one set of shares whereby I get cash instead of shares (a mistake at the time of purchase that I've never rectified) That means another £5,758 can be added to the monies received that I quoted:D

Stuart, you did kindly send me a copy of yur spreadsheet a little while ago but I'm afriad I coudn't open it and meant to get back to you. If I drop you a PM could you send me another please?

  • I've just made a £677.37 OP to the IO part and a £68.46 OP to the repayment part; it's only the second time I've made an OP to the repayment part as I usually concentrate on the IO but this month I wanted to make the payment up to what it was before the rate drop.

So, so far this month I've made total OP's of £745.83 and I'm anticipating making another next week which I will round up of course:D

Hope you are all doing well with your own OP's

On another PC now, but I will send the spreadsheet later, ok?

Nice "extra" you found with that review!
  • Hi all

I've just been doing my favourite monthly task - updating my signature:j

A few posts ago I did set myself a stretch target for the year end of getting the IO part down to £90k and the overall down to £180k. I think that the IO part is doable but the £180k is going to be really really tough and I might not quite make it; however, I've smashed my original OP target of £2700 in 2008 so I'm still really pleased:T
