Hey Everyone
I have a mobile phone and its contract is about to end this Sept. I have just brought another phone and i want to keep my original mobile number on the new phone. Does anyone know how to do this please and is there usually a charge? if yes how much is it on average?

Are you keeping the contract and just putting your old sim into your new phone ?, if you are then nothing needs to be done apart from making sure the new phone is unlocked to all networks and your old sim will work in it.
Or
Are you cancelling your contract and you want your new phone to use the number on PAYG ?, if you do, just write in to cancel after your 12 months are up and say you want the number turning into payg, as above aslong as the phone is unlocked, that should be fine.
Or
Are you cancelling your contract and wanting to go to a different network (voda,o2,orange etc..) and want to keep your number, ? if you do, you will need your Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) which you need to give to your new network and that gives the new network permission from your old one, to transfer the number, and again you will need to make sure the phone is unlocked as you will receive a new sim from your new network with your new number.
I've probably confused you now lol.
Any questions, just ask.0 -
if it's the third option and they already have bought a new contract not all networks allow you to Port in after commencing the contract(O2 and Voda IIRC)0

Hiya
Thanks for ur quick reply. Just 2 questions...
1. how do i unlock the new phone that i have got?
2. does requiring the PAC code cost anything usually?
thanks

Usually getting a PAC is free and depending on the model of the phone, you can get it unlocked online for £4.99 or at a local market for around the same price.0

Watch out when moving your number to a different mobile network. When you move a number to a new network, calls to the phone by other people will still count as calls to "other networks" even by people on the same network, and they will count as "other network" calls for people on the same network you were originally on - basically, once ported, no-one who is calling you will ever pay "same network" rates.0

What network are you on,and what network are you going to. i ask because Virgin will not accept ports from 3.PF.0

When you port a mobile no, people calling it from a landline, will always be charged at the rate it would cost to call the original network.EG: if you moved from Orange to O2 the caller from the landline would be charged as if he was calling an Orange Number. As there is no way of knowing that the number has been ported.
Likewise if they are calling it or texting it from a mobile, it will normally charge the caller at the rate it would have cost to phone the network the number originally started on.(If the caller has cross network minutes this is not such a problem. But if they have only have own network minutes,or are on payg they will probaly find the calls dearer then before).
In the case of outgong calls. If you port from another network. You will only be charged own network rates,as your own network system will know you are with them. Its only incomong calls where the problem arises.PF.0 -
Hiya
My old phone is from BT (it was on special offer this time last year where u pay effectively £4.99 per month) I have got a deal with Choose3 which is effectivley £2.99 per month for 500 mins and 100 texts. but considering i have hundreds of people who have my "old" number it would b a nightmare just informing them of my new number hence the reason why i just want to transfer my old number to my new phone.....0 -
Ring up the BT customer service number you got with the phone/contract. Ask them for your PAC code. They will give you it and send you a letter to confirm it and it will be active for 30 days.
Once received, ring your new service provider customer service number and say you want to bring your old number forward. They will as for your PAC code, give it to them and they will switch the number to your new sim card/phone.
