how much do you spend

  • Hi,

I'm a newbie too and want to cut my grocery bill down. So, after reading many of the tips on this board (I'm now the proud owner of some Stardrops) I have decided to make a note of everything I spend on food this month. Then, next month I will join the grocery challenge to see if I can trim it a little. However, on my last trip to the s-market I was very aware of what I was spending, so this stuff must be sinking in!

    Good luck...

    :confused::confused::confused:

we're not eating blocks of cheese and pints of cream! the bulk of the diet is vegetables with plenty of protein.

we're completely healthy, and much better now that the evil carbs are a thing of the past!

I wasn't being insulting, really, just when I saw meat twice a day and cream every day, BUT, if you both workout regularly, I suppose you are working it off. As we say on here, each to their own, we are not here to judge, just to pass comment;).

    well, he eats meat twice a day - I don't (i'm veggie).

a splosh of cream in a cup of decaf coffee isn't going to do any harm, except to the wallets!

We started low carbing to lose weight and it worked really really well, but we just have so much more energy eating this way. We both work out (not body building) and I'm much more toned than I was when I was eating carbs as the bulk of my diet (lazy vegetarian that relied on pasta and potatoes and caffeine to get through the day :o)

So do you not eat carbs at all? what would be a typical evening meal for you. Are you doing the Atkins?

When I did Atkins it was costing me £50 a week just for me.
The kids were only tiny, one was being bottle fed and one was only on small portions so the total bill was probably £70 a week.

I couldn't afford to do it now that the kids are older though, unless all I ate was eggs and chicken thighs/drumsticks, as meat is so expensive. You can't have cheaper sausages etc cos they are full of cereal etc.

Anyways back to the original question, we are a family of 4.5 (Step DD is here every other weekend, plus every weds) and 2 cats. I used to spend £300 a month on the grocery shop but now have got it down to about £200, we still have the odd week where we will splurge, say my OH comes with me and tempts me to try something (he isn't coming anymore after last weeks £90!) but we usually manage to stick to it.

My slow cooker has been great, especially as I can use up all my bits and bobs by just chucking it all in and telling OH we are having "wait and see pie"
We buy a lot of fruit too
  • there might have been the odd bottle of shampoo in that, but nothing else.

i cook everything from scratch too. a week's shopping will include bacon (12 rashers =£5), sausages (12 for £4), 3 dozen eggs (£12), 4 tuna steaks (£8), chicken portions (£8), cheese (up to £10), nuts (about £8), veg (maybe £35), 3 pints of cream (£5), 4 sea bass fillets (£12), king prawns (£6), mayonnaise (£1), fruit tea bags (£3), olive oil (£2), butter (£2).............

it's no-where near the cost of our mortgage! ;)

£35 a week on veg - for the two of you? Is that a typo? I was on Atkins last year and that cost a fortune!
    MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. Overpayment Total to date: £414.26:jMortgage start 28/9/07 £46,217.00 :TMortgage balance as of 25/05/11 £24,490.58 :T
Interest saved as of 25/05/11: £2,849.84 Projected term reduction as of 25/05/11: 9 years 11 months

I always hover on the grocery challenge thread and never dare to join up as our figures seem so high, yet we too cook from scratch, menu plan, etc.
    !

I used to think that, but since joining the GC I have found that noone is at all judgemental about the amount that other people spend or are aiming for as we all have different circumstances and priorities. I currently spend about £370 a month for 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids aged 6 and 3) for all food, drinks (including wine and beer) and cleaning stuff. I usually buy organic meat, eggs and dairy products, and about half the fruit and veg I buy is organic. I always meal plan and don't waste food. To be honest I don't think I will be reducing that given the rising price of food, as we can afford it and I don't want to compromise on the organic produce at the moment. I have cut down quite a bit by baking almost all my own bread, making HM yoghurt and swapping juice for water at meal times during the week.
