I like nice food so never skimp, YET, I hate waste and never spend just for the sake of it, nor am I extravagant and I always cook from scratch.

I have never counted what I spend on food, but I have been looking on the Grocery challenge thread and although I haven't joined it, I have started to make a note of what we spend on food. I am keeping receipts for every item of food I buy this month, just out of interest to see exactly what we spend in a typical month. Even when I run out of milk, the receipt goes into the pot. I won't say I will do this every month, but it will be interesting to see what we spend.

There is usually just two of us but the odd weekend there will be three.

We are a family of 5 and I spend about £240p/m on everything including nappies, toiletries and cleaning stuff.

Would ideally like to get it down lower but finding it difficult.

Try joining the Monthly grocery challenges on here. They really help you focus on what you spend.

    Hi,

I spend just over £200 for 2 of us for a month. Which is a LOT of money. I am trying to get it down and am using the Grocery Challenge to try and that. There's tonnes of useful tips there.

I have just realised exactly HOW much I have in my cupboards and a lot of it has been there for donkeys so I need to get a move on and clear it out then I may even 'shop from the cupboards' for a week.

Get paid on 23rd so I will start properly from then but I have started from the 1s April so will have 3 weeks of GC.

    Come and join us!

    :D :j

Last month's food shopping cost just over £700 for me and my OH. :o

He only eats organic free range meat, I will only buy organic free range eggs, sustainable fish is costly and we eat tons of fresh veg and salad every week.

We're both on a low carb diet, so no cheap fillers like pasta, bread, potatoes for us.

    Very little gets wasted though.

BLIMEY MOTHER! I buy free range eggs and chicken and I am just checking this month how much I actually spend, but it will be nowhere near that:eek: However I am not judging you.

tinkerbelle we were previously a family of 7 and now down to leaving home only 4 or 5 of us but i could never spend £700 on food a month even with the full 7 of us.

that is more than our mortgage!

we probably spend about £250-£300 a month and i can assure you we eat very well for that. but we do eat pasta bread potatoes etc. along with loads of fresh veg and i cook everything from scratch.

i would love to know what you by to actually manage to spend £700 a month.

if i was super extravagant i would probably spend £500 and that would be including all toiletries and cleaning products etc.

there might have been the odd bottle of shampoo in that, but nothing else.

i cook everything from scratch too. a week's shopping will include bacon (12 rashers =£5), sausages (12 for £4), 3 dozen eggs (£12), 4 tuna steaks (£8), chicken portions (£8), cheese (up to £10), nuts (about £8), veg (maybe £35), 3 pints of cream (£5), 4 sea bass fillets (£12), king prawns (£6), mayonnaise (£1), fruit tea bags (£3), olive oil (£2), butter (£2).............

it's no-where near the cost of our mortgage! ;)
