Recommendations for cookbook for low sugar / candida diet ?

Hiya

Does anyone have any recommendations of cookbooks for a very low sugar / yeast killing diet ? The darn library is closed for refurbishment and I've spent the last hour trawling Amazon, but don't want to part with dosh in case its c*ap. Everything has to be cooked from scratch, no processed foods :)

I went on this diet for two weeks when I was a bit younger and it worked. I did it from a chapter in a book (it was a free book with a mag). The book had no recipes, just a list of foods that were good to include for being anti-yeast (if you want these let me know and I will bring the book to work tomorrow to copy the list). It also recommended Pau D'Arco tea (I bought it loose from a tea shop but you can get the caps in H&B). I did not like the taste of this but drank lots cos it is supposed to kill candida.

It was a VERY limited list of foods though. I remember I ate a lot of steamed green veg (certain stuff like sweetcorn you can't have), brown rice etc, eggs etc and drank lots of water with lemon juice. There was a reason I only stuck it for two weeks...but it was effective! You also have to limit fruit cos of the sugar.

    Hi,

I did a Candida cleanse a few weeks ago. Here's as far as i can remember the things i had to cut out:

Grain - no grains at all, not even rice
    Potatoes
Wheat - really comes under grain but to remind you about pasta and bread
Dairy - could have yoghurt, and eggs i think, but no milk or cheese etc
starchy carbs - this includes the vast majority of veggies.
    Caffeine.
    Soy.
    Sugar
    ALL Processed foods.

Edit: Also just remembered cant have:
Fruit - except for peeled green apples
    Peanuts
    Mushrooms
    Yeast products (like marmite etc)

Edit 2: You can have carrots but I was advised to only have them juiced with the apples. Dont know why it made a difference but apparently it did. Carrot and apple juice is lush by the way.

Now this is designed as a short detox type diet to kill off the candida, and I am NOT a nutritionist so this is not in anyway meant to be advice, I'm just letting you know what I did. However, this is obviously not a healthy way to eat on a regular basis, but it did the trick for me. I followed it religiously, and took a few supplements, for a fortnight and I personnally felt fantastic.

Cant really recommend any specific recipes, but the one thing i remember having lots of was cider vinegar as salad dressing with olive oil - it's very good for the candida.

I basically lived on salad and fish / meat.

    hope this helps.

There's a thread on books for heart disease AND diabetes in the Cooking section of the MEGA Index under books that might give you some ideas?

  • I've never tried the extreme version MrsB mentioned! I started an anti-candida regime over a year ago, which initially involved cutting out bread, alcohol and mushrooms among other things, as well as sugar of course.
After feeling better for a few weeks, I started reintroducing dietary items, and found I could tolerate most non-sugary foods. I could eat foods containing yeast if it's thoroughly cooked, and some alcholic drinks in moderation, but not anything frothy or sparkling, since this indicates live yeast. I have a hydrometer so I can check that wine is dry before I drink it.
I take Multibionta, which contains useful probiotics to combat candida, and vitamins and minerals which aid the body's natural defences. It's also yeast-free.
However, recently my candida symptoms have got worse again, so maybe I should try one of the extreme diets for a couple of weeks.

I started the candida diet 2 days ago in desperation to stop my anxiety that i am getting.
    I have in moderation :
    brown rice,oats,potatoes,wholemeal flour,soya margarine,decaff tea/coffee.

Plenty of meats, vegtables and soya milk.

    No Dairy
    No fruits except=
1/4 of a banana a day to sweeten up my porridge or oat cake (made with soya margarine).

One tablet a day to kill of the candida from Holland barrett.

I have just ordered a book of amazon about this subject but dont know what its like yet. Dont think you can be too strict on yourself with this diet because you need to be able to stick to it without getting bored.
Please let me know how your getting on.

Could you tell me what kind you use, and do you think they're any good? I was looking in H&B and I noticed they have about 3 different kinds of anti-candida tablets. I'd be grateful if someone can advise me which is best.

  • Regulars will know that one of my many hobbyhorses is the benefits that can be obtained by drinking Green Tea rather than brown tea or coffee.
This may be another good reason.
Multiple effects of green tea catechin on the antifungal activity of antimycotics against Candida albicans.
I can see that there is a moneysaving implication in not buying stuff which hasn't got much hope of working but I don't want to break any rules here so perhaps those wanting further information might read the information at What really works.
It would also be sensible to read the thread in the discussion forum about improving your immune system.
