which broadband isp???

Im being really nagged by by hubby and children to get broadband, so ive been looking around and dont know who to go with. I know you lot are nice and helpful in here, so thought that if I told you what I need you would advise (please!)
Im currently on wanadoo dial up and pay £14.99 a month. Ideally Id like not to pay any more than that (I can hope cant I !) I dont have any debit/ credit cards so would need to pay by direct debit, and I cant afford any upfront huge payments.
Id prefer uncapped, or a big monthly allowance. I was nearly tempted by tiscalli with the 512k 30gb for £14.99 a month but reading what you lot had to say about them made me change my mind. I do need good support cos I can be pretty useless at anything technical!

So, what can anyone come up with?

  • Tesco Internet is uncapped but they only currently offer a 512k connection.
This is still 10x faster than your current dial up however.
Expect to pay around £18 for your uncapped Tesco broadband.
I know a few people with it and they have no complaints!

  • Check out Bulldog DSL.

They offer 8mb DSL Connections and also from around £8 per month I am led to believe on special offer.

Only requirement is BT Line needed.

    Hope this helps

Recommend Metronet, cheap for the low user, only 1 month contract, payment after usage not in advance, good customer service, speeds as good as anyone.I have 3 computers on my connection and bill only £15.00 last month. What more do you need. Just try to find many threads about them here.
P.S. Check out the ADSL Guide forums to get a good guide on the ISP's available. http://www.adslguide.org/

E7 generally has some great offers. At the moment you get:

1M uncapped broadband for £10 per month
2M uncapped broadband for £13 per month

They have great free email support (and expensive dial up support).
You get a free static ip adddress (this is good - some others charge)
    Unlimited email addresses
Free .co.uk domain registration and hosting
I've been with them for a year - I had one outage (caused by BT) and e7 gave all customers a 2 week extension to compensate !!!

Downsides - You have to pay up front and there is a £50 connection fee if you sign up for 1 yeat (no fee if you sign up for 2 years)

Check the e7 referrers thread for more information and save more money by using a referral code !

    Cheers

Bulldog + Tiscalli have appalling Customer Service, AOL is a nightmare to remove from your PC if you ever want to move to another supplier

there is a long thread on here about the cheapest providers with peoples personal experiences

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=38285

and I would also recommend the adsl guide forums to check out what people are saying about particular suppliers, there is also a top 10 good/bad that is voted for by users

I must point out that mike has a vested interest in his recommendation as he is sending you to his referral ink from which he stands to benefit

I agree fully with Browntoa here. Bulldog and Tiscali have been the top two most complained about ISPs in the UK for ages now. As much as the companies say they are dealing with it, at the moment it is getting no better.

Untill both these companies have a major overhaul of the way they offer their services. Everyone should avoid these.

I can certainly recommend Tesco, been with them since its inception and their dial up service before that.

Free modem, £17.99 monthy uncapped for 512.

Offer at the moment is £14.99 monthly for broadband for one year provided you take out a home phone package. They have a PAYG package which doesn't require any monthly payment so you could take that out and use 18866, provided of course you have a BT line.

Bulldog has removed a logo from its website that brags about it being ISAP's "Best consumer broadband ISP 2004" following a "recommendation" from the trade group.
The ISP - which is facing a barrage of complaints about its broadband service from unhappy customers - has also removed all mention of the award from the recorded messages that greet customers who phone the ISP.
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/15/bulldog_logo/

A group of Bulldog's broadband customers are so annoyed at the ISP's customer service record that they've launched a campaign to get Bulldog stripped of its title of 'Consumer broadband provider of the year'.
    http://networks.silicon.com/broadband/0,39024661,39124076,00.htm

More than 130 individual complaints have been sent to Ofcom detailing problems faced by customers of broadband ISP Bulldog.
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/26/ofcom_bulldog/

Ofcom could launch a formal investigation into Bulldog by the end of the month, according to correspondence seen by The Register.
The telecoms regulator has already appointed a case leader to examine complaints about the local loop unbundling (LLU) ISP owned by telecoms giant Cable & Wireless (C&W).
Those complaints include billing issues while others report being left stranded without phone and internet services.

    I still recommend it...
