Supermarket trolley deposits

I know someone who took a trolley from Sainsbury's all the way back to his room in college (for anyone who knows Cambridge that's from Sidney Street to Queens'), pleasantly informing the checkout assistant he was "taking it to the car". He did take it back though.

I seriously doubt any supermarket would issue an order for obtaining goods by deception for using a token instead of a pound - it's a deposit not a payment after all, and it's for a licence to use a trolley not a contract for purchase of one. I expect it would get thrown out of court.

I once took a trolley back to the trolley park at Morrisons and the token jumped out and landed under the long line of trolleys. After seeing me scrabble under the trolleys the jobsworth trolley attendant asked if "he could help" and after a bit of persuasion pulled the trolleys over for me so that I could pick it up.

Amazing how far manners can get you :)

    This is the secret message.
  • My mum saved a 1 euro coin form her hols so that she could use it in the trolley at the supermarket. She gave it to me to get a trolley and I went over to get one. The blue bit on the handle clearly had a picture of a £1 coin and a 1euro coin and had arrowns pointing to the right slots. I tried the 1 euro and the buggers had blocked up the slot!! I looked at a few more and they had all been filled in with a bit of blue plastic. Now why on earth would they have the picture of the 1 euro coin on the top of the flippin thing but then not actually let you use them? I see that they would say people would not be bothered about losing a euro if they wanted to take the trolley but why advertise it and they not actually allow it that the thing I don't get!!
  • In Lidl's you can put a 20p in the slot instead of £1 but you still have to contend with people offering you a £1 for the trolley.

I have one of those tokens that cost me £1. They do work in the Morrisons near us. I work at a supermarket and we use a corned beef key to release the trolleys.

I recommend a 20cent euro coin, as used by me today in Aldi when I couldn't get my euro in the slot.

I'm sure I am right to say that Sainsbury's will soon be introducing their own token for their £1 trollies. I don't think they're available just yet but will be in the very near future.

I bought for £1.50 a MacMillan Nurses token that supposedly can be used instead of the £1 coin to obtain a supermarket trolley. This works fine in Sainsburys.

Today I took my elderly mum to Morrisons as it's nearer her side of town, and my token wouldn't work in any of their trolleys, so I had to use a £1. They also want a £1 on the same system to get a wheelchair for her, and if she hadn't got a disabled badge there would have been yet another £1 (all refundable) for parking.

I don't object to refundable deposits, but why on earth don't they fix their trolleys to accept tokens? I'm hardly likely to abscond with a trolley and lose a £1.50 token - if I wanted one then it would be cheaper to lose a £1 coin!

We have to make sure we have several £1 coins on us before we can even start shopping.

I had this trouble at Morrisons too. Then I noticed that if you took the token off the key ring, it did work. A part of the key ring was stopping the token being pushed in far enough. On taking the token off the key ring, it worked.

At ASDA, I found the token worked without taking it off the key ring.

    Strange.

I keep £1 in the outer pocket on my coolbag so I've always got one when I do a big food shop. Except that at the moment my dh is taking me shopping because I can't drive, so we take two trolleys and do half the list each, and I don't always get my £1 back again!

  • Can I just chip my two penneth worth in. How much do you think a trolley costs to manufacture? I can tell you......60 quid minimum dependent on size of trolley. Now how many people give things to strangers in the hope they are going to return it? I dont and never would do and a quid returnable deposit i.e. costs nowt I certainly would not complain about. Then again I suppose we could make all supermarket trolleys free....watch the mentally challenged thinking it's a joke running off with them and watch prices going to compensate for this.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmtoughy isnt it?

    Hi All,

In the new ASDA in Huyton near Liverpool, as stated above by someone, the trollies have wheellocks, so if you try to take it out of the car park area, a lock on one of the front wheels engages and locks the trolly. Only way then would be to pick it up and run, or put it in the back of a van and drive out or something!

Not sure exactly how the system works, there is a beacon on the wall near to the painted lines, so this must activate the lock!

    Cheers
