Supermarket trolley deposits

Options
I bought for £1.50 a MacMillan Nurses token that supposedly can be used instead of the £1 coin to obtain a supermarket trolley. This works fine in Sainsburys.

Today I took my elderly mum to Morrisons as it's nearer her side of town, and my token wouldn't work in any of their trolleys, so I had to use a £1. They also want a £1 on the same system to get a wheelchair for her, and if she hadn't got a disabled badge there would have been yet another £1 (all refundable) for parking.

I don't object to refundable deposits, but why on earth don't they fix their trolleys to accept tokens? I'm hardly likely to abscond with a trolley and lose a £1.50 token - if I wanted one then it would be cheaper to lose a £1 coin!

We have to make sure we have several £1 coins on us before we can even start shopping.

    Interesting post.
    Why wouldn't the token work?
We have one of these too and it works in Somerfield

Why would you want to use a token instead of a £1 coin? Instead of spending £1.50 on a token wouldnt it just make more sense to put aside one or two £1 coins for use in supermarket trollies etc?

Yes it would, but I didn't have enough £1 coins on me. Besides which, that is the whole point of the tokens. You buy them to support the charity, tuck them into your purse, and theoretically don't have to worry about checking how many £1 coins you have on you before setting out on a shopping trip.

I had plenty of 20p's and a couple of £2 coins on me, but had to trouble mum for the loan of a £1, then remember to pay it back to her when we'd finished.

    It's just extra hassle.

I have one of these tokens bought because I went to a supermaket to do a shop and could not have a trolley. Because I had no change.

The reason being I went with my husband and he took his car keys and wallet so only had cards which is standard when out doing a food shop. As we where paying for the goods from household account by card why would I think that I needed to take change to buy my weekly shop

I will not leave money lying around in the car even hidden as I fear it will tempt people to break it. And when I want it I will never remember that I have the money in the car.

So to me it is well worth the money I spend on it, if it is anyone elses business what I spend my money on. As my husband and me each have one on our sets of keys. So it will never be forgotten. As to do a proper food shop we would need to take the car.

    Yours

    Calley

I have a token that is attached to my keys...its far better than trying to 'save' a pound coin in my purse.

I can understand the logic in buying the token. Apart from supporting the charity, it will ensure that you don't spend your last £1 coin by mistake so you'll always be able to use a supermarket trolley..........unless you shop at Morrisons.

This doesn't surprise me. When I tried to plan my Christmas food shopping last year.........every supermarket had a printed sheet with their opening times except Morrisons.

We have a few european tokens either from aparthotels, or from supermarket customer services desks near channel ports where we've gone to the desk and said we've not got change for the trolley. The problem is at Aldi/Lidl's etc when we honestly have to explain why we won't hand over our trolley to the next person for a £1 coin, because all we've use is a plastic disc!!!

p.s. The aparthotel keyring had a disc on the ring with our room key that we could use for supermarket trolleys!!
  • I have one of these tokens (I received it free from Vision Express) and I have to take it off the keyring for it to release a trolley at Morrisons, otherwise the token doesn't go in far enough !!!!

Maybe this is the reason it didn't work.

They don't work in Pets at Home trolleys. There was a token jammed solid in the trolley I used at the weekend.
Here I go again on my own....
  • These tokens do work in Morrisons trolleys as they are sold in there to support the charity of the year. If you don't have a pound handy ask one of the trolley men and they will release one for you no problem.
