USB modem - do I need an ISP?

Hi there, looking for some friendly help for my non techie self....
I have a flat that I use two or three nights a week for work. I have BT total broadband there - as I also do at my main home but it is really costly. I pay £18 per month and this is only for two days a week access.
Yesterday i was sold a USB modem which is supposed to access the internet anytime anywhere, so I bought it, thinking I can use this for my flat PC, my laptop etc, and it is much cheaper, Carphone Warehouse sold it to me for ten pounds a month, from 3.
My idea now is to get rid of BT broadband at the flat, have no landline (use my mobile for tel calls) and use the USB modem at the flat, and out and about with my laptop..
Does this make any sense? Or should I take it back? I have three days to decide!!

Bear in mind that the £10 gives you just 1GB download allowance, and BT will be much more (maybe 8GB or more).
If you use more than 1GB, then it will cost you more than the £10.0 -
3 have a nasty reptuation for stinging you for overusage, so I'd be careful yeah, though in principal your solution will work0

thanks everyone.
I wonder how I could check that I am not overusing? I really only use ebay, mse and another board, as well as hotmail and the occasional access from home onto my work server (two or three times weekly)
I don't intend to dump BT at my main home, just at the flat.
Anu further help would be most welcome, I'm really grateful for your help thus far.

Have a read of this thread

but do check your contract with BT before cancelling.0 -
If you find you use more data, 3 have other tariffs, like 3 GB for £15 or 7 GB for £25
I did read there was an offer of their broadband cheaper in their own shops, but haven't been in to check.0 -

It is cheaper in their own shops. I signed up for £5/month which gives me 1GB allowance- i.e. half usual price. Also got free modem
You can check remaining data on 3 website or within the USB modem software0 -
oh excuse me, I am dim
Does this mean that I have got broadband provided by 3 in the pack? Up to 1MB per month use?
Or does it mean that I have just bought a USB modem? There is only a modem box, I haven't opened it yet, cos I may yet take it back......
Bit nervous and unsure, sorry (middle aged mom...)0 -
Yes. it's a USB modem with a 3 SIM card inside it (or ready to install), and that data contract
I'd check the T&C with the Carphone Warehouse, like can you try it out briefly then still decide you don't want it, or are you committed as soon as you open the box and connect?
If you can try it, check how good the coverage is and how fast the connection goes.
Then check about cancelling with BT; if that is on longer notice, then think about getting the 3 deal a bit later on. And ask the 3 shop about getting it cheaper ...0 -
oooer
that data contract and the software update, does it mean that I can get internet with it, even if I cancel BT total braodband??
still dim.
Does it mean that 3 becomes my ISP rather than BT?
Its still lyihg unopened in my car, in the carrier bag from Carphone W.... and I don't want to open it. Really feel like I was sold it under pressure cos I have no idea how it works. Or do you think I am being just a dimwit? Not really sure.....
and if 3 is my new ISP and I have signed up to 18mionths, what do I do if the speed of access is poor.
I feel as though i have been "blagged" my son's words
