and no annoying the poor cashiers

poor things. it's part of their job I reckon: however I wouldn't do this sort of transaction at lunchtime but luckily I can go in at a relatively quiet time.0 -
Nationwide will only allow you to pay in a maximum of 5 bags of coins at a time, and they must be full.
Very annoying when you have a jar full of coins as it can weeks (can only visit the branch on a Saturday) to pay them all in.

Yep Darka is right, Nationwide are IDIOTS when it comes to bags of coins and are misers for the 5 bag limit....
My GF took 8 bags of coins plus about £3 loose (mostly 20's and 10's with a few coppers).
They would only accept 5 bags full stop!
I complained to them twice about this and got fobbed off with a different excuse each time....
"the safe is too small to hold lots of change" (like an extra 3 bags take up too much space?), "it takes too long for the cashiers to count" (what when its in bags?), it holds the queues up too much (what to weigh 8 bags instead of 5)0 -

I used to fill a gallon Johnny Walker whisky bottle, took a bit of time, but when it was full, there was over £200 in 1, 2, 5, & 20ps, wouldn't take 10p, too big, now would you like to be standing behind me if I took that in to be counted?
I got a young friend to give me a hand to count and bag it, gave her £20 and my local was always needing change, so they took it, saved them getting change at the bank and having to pay for it.0 -

sometimes I've been in queues where it's seemed that EVERYONE has had whiskey bottles like this.0 -
Hi,
you can see why the banks don't want folks going in with loads of loose change, just too time consuming for the cashier.
The person standing waiting for the money to be counted is in no hurry, but the other poor folk waiting....:mad:0 -
Ironically, banks have more or less given up on paper money, and coin handling, and have outsourced the bulk of this to cash handling companies for a fee.
So if you a large cash customer, eg a pub, or supermarket, your cash deposits, and change delivery are all handled by a cash handling company. Who collect and deliver periodically. eg Securitas. To and from central hubs owned by them. The cash handlers also arbitrage (slightly) the cash they hold on behalf of customers.
This is part of the reason that supermarkets have all installed the Coinstars, as it's cheaper for them to get a proportion of their change from there.
This also the reason that the large branches have installed the change machines, as again it saves on their cash handling fees. And why banks seem to have an aversion to taking your coins.0 -
Hi..on the same subject..I've got quite a bit in £5 notes...any problem getting this changed?? ta0

into what?
If you pay (say) £500 in £5 notes into your account, and then immediately ask to withdraw £500, I wouldn't be surprised if you were given it in £20 notes.
Why do banks always seem short of the other denominations?
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.
