Not sure about that. There are some poor hosts in the UK just as their are poor hosts everywhere. My hosting has always been on UK servers though and I can't fault the speed or reliability over the last few years. I've been told that if you are a UK business it's better to have your website hosted in the UK, that way there are usually less links in the chain for uk customers viewing your site, meaning there are less servers to go through which could improve uptime and perhaps make it slightly faster.

hmm that's not the reason - your connection will still be a bottle neck so it makes no difference..

The reason is that search engines will bring up your page in "UK only" searches - however if you have a .co.uk domain this makes little difference.
