    As a non wine drinker the whole aisle just looks way too confusing!! Thanks lots.

    I'll add this to the existing thread on cooking wines to keep ideas together :D

    I use the mini bottles from Asda. The last one I used with beef in the slow cooker was a red called Campo Viejo Crianza. I used about one glass worth, and it made the stock very tasty.

    The advantage of the little bottles if you aren't a wine drinker is that they have screw tops, so you can use what you need and save the rest for next time.

    :eek::eek::eek: What a waste.........that's a lovely wine to drink too. :)

    It wasn't a waste, honest. It was the most fabulous dinner I've ever had with beef in it. I'm not keen on beef, but it tasted wonderful.

    I'm another one that uses what's left in a bottle to add to sauces - made a shepherds pie on Saturday that had a good glug of red in it - very tasty too.

    If you're not a wine drinker but looking for a suitable bottle for cooking with, then most of the supermarket "offer" wines are perfectly good. I'd probably look for a C - D rating (Red wine is Rated A - E, with A being light and E being a dark full bodied wine)
  • I'm cooking more vegetarian food these days and saving loads of money. One trick I've found to make a lot of these meals taste even better is to add a splosh of wine to them, but I'm wondering what's the cheapest way to do this? I'm also trying to cut down on my drinking the stuff (!) so i don't want to open a whole bottle and then be tempted ... However, I've also found that if I leave a bottle once it's opened, it quickly turns to vinegar (not even any use for adding to food).

    I've looked at the very small bottles supermarkets sell, but the cheapest is around £1.60 - a lot to add to the basic price of a meal.

    Anyone have any advice on the cheapest way to add wine to food when cooking it ?
  • Make your own? Ive been doing this for years and when it doesnt taste as good as Id like for drinking I use for cooking.

    You could also freeze left over wine.(not known in our house)
    in ice cube trays to use as and when.

    Seconded! Exactly the same as Kantankrus mare above :D

    I make it for about £1 per bottle and it gets used for drinking and cooking.

    I buy boxes, £10 from Asda. They hold the same as 3 bottles but it stays fresh for about a month so you can have a glass or a splosh for a recipe and stick it back in the fridge.
